Team, ethics and competitive advantage is a course, which not only enables learners to master the knowledge of ethics, leadership and business, but also enables learners to master their own knowledge. Through this course, I have a more comprehensive understanding of myself. In this article, I will discuss two main aspects of this course and my personal thoughts and opinions on their application in my future study and career. These two aspects are performance improvement and moral construction. Performance improvement involves the establishment of self motivation, which is adopted by most experts in their field. Improving productivity through relaxation and exploratory learning is also a way to achieve excellent performance. Moral construction itself involves two aspects: personal level and leadership level. The comprehensive method of moral decision-making and the use of social network are the main ways of moral construction. The learning results of these courses will contribute to my academic achievement and career success in the future.
Performance improvement has always been an important topic in the business field, not only at the organizational level, but also at the individual level. Experts in different fields have observed a self-regulation process, which is most helpful to improve performance and academic level (Zimmerman, 2002). The study found that personal diligence, initiative and self-guidance skills are essential to develop a self regulatory framework at the individual level. It establishes a cycle of performance, self reflection and foresight (Zimmerman, 2002) as an effective way of self-improvement. As a master of business student, this model can be applied to my future study. Consciously practicing this cycle in the learning process will help me realize my strengths and weaknesses. The model should also be regarded as the source of motivation, that is, intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic motivation. Experts can work for a long time because of their internal motivation. Such motivation will greatly help to improve my attention level and help me achieve excellent academic results. This motivation should not be limited to academia, as learning opportunities can come from anywhere, especially in future careers. Through positive observation, reflection and self-regulation, I will be able to quickly adapt to the new professional environment and make progress faster than my peers.
Continuous excellence and good performance can also be achieved through coaching. Sometimes, the pursuit of excellence and productivity can become a burden. People may set unrealistic goals for themselves to achieve, but when their goals are not achieved, they will find more frustration. Therefore, understanding physical and psychological limitations is important for goal setting and productivity improvement. If the pursuit of productivity does not understand that the mind needs to be updated, it may lead to negative results. For example, some people who work long hours find that their work efficiency is far lower than expected (COE, Zehnder and kinlaw, 2008). This is because their commitment and focus are reduced by physical and mental fatigue. As a result, they constantly leave work and allow themselves to "rest" by browsing social networks and watching online videos. These breaks are not real relaxation because people always feel guilty. After working for a long time, people's work efficiency will be significantly reduced due to frustration and fatigue, rather than concentrating on their work. Therefore, self-guidance is very necessary for individuals without sacrificing long-time work. Coe, Zehnder and kinlaw (2008) believe that concentration cannot last long, which should be kept in mind when making plans. The hardest part should be allocated to the time when people feel most productive. For my study and future career, the balance between working time and rest time is necessary, and even crucial to maximize work efficiency and performance. Sacrificing time to relax is most likely to lead to negative consequences of long-term performance and productivity.
When it comes to the details of guiding design, three core design elements are identified as exploratory learning, error framework and emotion control (Bell & Kozlowski, 2008). These three elements are usually mixed in the active learning structure, which makes it difficult to determine the effectiveness of each element. Exploratory learning is a learning method with self-interest as the main motivation and free from constraints and constraints. In the experiment of exploratory learning, people find that traditional teaching is more likely to obtain better test results (Bell & Kozlowski, 2008). However, after exploratory learning, students perform better in analogy transfer and adaptive transfer. This means that traditional learning and exploratory learning actually complement each other. Although reading industry related magazines, browsing relevant websites and videos may not improve my academic performance in the master of business program, they will help to apply knowledge in the real world and future career. Therefore, exploratory learning is an effective way to internalize my knowledge. There is no direct impact between error framework and students' motivation level. This may be because the error framework can produce different self-regulation processes in different individuals (Bell & Kozlowski, 2008). Finally, emotional control is another determinant of productivity and performance. This is consistent with the previous discussion on the benefits of relaxation time to improve productivity. Preventing and reducing negative emotions related to learning and career development should be my priority in the future.
Another important lesson in the course is to understand one's moral framework. This is as important as performance and excellence, because it is the code of one's beliefs and behavior. There are different principles guiding people's personal morality. Sometimes right and wrong are only related to these principles. For example, some people take a more general approach to ethics, while others are more utilitarian in decision-making (Schwartz, 2016). When it comes to most decisions in life, I believe I am the latter kind of person. For most people, maximizing happiness is the best choice I think most of the time. Decision making is often complex and involves many factors. According to Schwartz (2016), there are rational and irrational decisions under the influence of personal and situational factors. Therefore, a comprehensive decision-making method is proposed so that people can make ethical decisions according to specific situations. In comprehensive decision-making, individual factors and situational factors are identified and evaluated through emotion, intuition or rationality. Assessment ultimately leads to a person's decisions and actions. In my future career, ethical behavior is the key first step in leadership capacity-building.
As we have discussed, different people may have different ethical frameworks and different views. This further complicates the group decision making problem (GDM). However, in almost all disciplines, the need for team decision-making is very common. Dictatorship is not a constructive way to build group cohesion and vitality. Instead, listen to the group members before making a decision. The most common group decision-making methods are described as: collecting representative information and opinions, accumulating situational assessment, and selecting the best choice (P é rez, et al., 2016). This process usually involves compromise, and the most professional opinions and information are usually most valued in the team. However, such a process is only an ideal model. In fact, there are other factors that are important for group decision-making (P é rez et al., 2016). Personal influence and social network are also considered to be the determinants of group decision-making. For example, a popular person may have more say in issues than a less popular person, even though they have the same level of expertise. Social networking is more relevant to my future career than the current period, but the influence ability should be cultivated as soon as possible. As a team leader, understanding these impacts and minimizing potential negative consequences also contribute to better GDM.
In short, understanding yourself is the first step to great success. In terms of academic and performance, this course taught me to establish a cycle of continuous reflection and critical thinking. Exploratory learning and productivity skills also help me become a more efficient learner and gain a competitive advantage in my work. In terms of ethics, I learned to use a comprehensive approach in decision-making to maximize happiness or benefits. An ethical leader always considers the long term and has the qualities of humility, justice, responsibility and respect (mihelic, lipick and tekavcic, 2010). I intend to apply these concepts to my best ability and set an example in the future.
