Then the author gives the specific reasons for why the identity of the Caribbean is so problematic and the reasons can be listed as below ones: the origin of the Caribbean is hard to be located; questions of identity are always questions about representation, questions about the invention but not simply the discovery of tradition, questions about narrative, the stories which cultures tell themselves about who they are and where they came from; the ethnic and cultural diversity in Caribbean.

   Then the author talks about the complexes of cultural identification in Caribbean society and how its complexes come into being. On one hand, the enslaved population, the retention of old customs, the retention of cultural traits from Africa makes up one part of its complexes. And on the other hand, the profound process of assimilation to drag the whole society into some imitative relationship with this other culture which one could never quite reach also account for its complexes. Afterwards, the author uses his personal story to indicate that identity is not only a story but a narrative which we tell ourselves about ourselves, it is stories which change with historical circumstances and that identities actually come from outside, they are the way in which we are recognized and then come to step into the place of the recognitions which others give us. Without the others there is no self, there is no self-recognition.

  Thirdly, the author speaks about the possibilities of cultural identification, of the different traditions of the peoples for whom on the whole there were no cultural models, the peoples at the bottom of the society. During this process, he involved in his interview with Aime Cesaire in order to better deliver the myths of Caribbean identity.

   This chapter is primarily about the brief but brilliant period around the beginning of the eighteenth century known as the Golden Age of Piracy which contains pirates from various nationalities. The pirates were a motley lot: men of many nations, several races, varied abilities, and widely ranging temperaments. Pirates were the darlings of the eighteenth-century media and the public avidly followed their exploits. The author points out that the Golden Age furnished the classic pirate images immortalized by painters, writers and film makers and the appearance of pirates is a result of history’s greatest outbreaks of sea robbery.

   Afterwards, the author expresses the fact that war brings privateers while peace brings pirates and the surge in piracy was predictable. Later on, an infestation of rogues in this period was introduced and here rogues were lower-class men with roots in England’s West Country and Wales where piracy was in the blood, former indentured servants or poor colonial whites, Catholics. The fact is that on many ships there were runaway slaves and mulattos and pirate crews often excluded married men to avoid potential domestic entanglements. Golden Age pirate captains might be in their thirties or forties but the average pirate was about twenty-five. Almost all English-speaking pirates were recruited from the ranks of the British navy or had served as merchant seamen or privateers and a pirate crew was tantamount to a holiday cruise.

   Pirates of this era also established an early welfare system similar to that pioneered by the buccaneers. Pirate articles varied slightly from captain to captain and the captain had few special privileges. Pirates were vengeful and some of them were particularly sadistic. The acme of senseless pirate cruelty was introduced and many men died of tropical diseases while waiting off the coast. Then the author put forward that the pirates of this extraordinary period could not have operated without their bases and their most important base is New Providence, through this the author emphasizes on the importance of the existence of a pirate republic. After that, the author has subsequently introduced pirate fare and pirate fashion, sunken treasure in 1715, harsh measures and so on. In order to make it more convincing, the author has, in the meantime, listed some unusual pirates like Anne Bonny, Mary Read as well as the last of the Golden Age pirate captain called Bartholomew Roberts. In the end, the author concentrates on talking about the end of this era.
