Dear UNH Students:
I’m here to support the opinion that “Internet is spreading fake news”. As the student in University of New Hampshire, it is quite common for us to be busted by fake news on the internet. Therefore, the ignorance of the existence of fake news on the Internet is not necessary.
1. Introduction
With the rapid development of Internet in recent years, the wide application of Internet all over the world has become quite controversial, with both positive sides and negative sides. The essay is to discuss the controversial aspects brought by Internet. Firstly, a development history of Internet is presented. Secondly, both positive and negative sides of Internet spread are discussed. Then, a discussion about the phenomena of Internet’s widespread of fake news on social media is conducted. At last, conclusions are made on the topic of “Is Internet spreading fake news?”.
2. A brief introduction on Internet’s development history
Firstly invented by ARPA, the initial intention for the application of internet is to provide convenience for information communication intra government departments (Ryan, 2010). Despite the achievement of smooth communications between different computers inside LAN, it was still hard to get a connection between different LANs. In 1980, the invention of TCP/IP protocol solved the communication problem and made it possible to communicate through the whole network (Wertheim, 2001). Along with the worldwide economic development, the development of Internet is getting more and more rapid, revealing the society transition from industrialization society to informatics society. According to Kruger (2016), there are more than 5 billion users on the internet, with an annual growth rate of 15% in the future. Not only the amount of Internet users has grown rapidly, but also does the application fields of Internet, including finance, social work and e-business.
3. What has Internet brought us?
3.1 Positive sides brought by Internet
With the rapid development of Internet, human life is becoming more and more colorful and interesting. According to Davidow (2011),the application of Internet in many fields have brought us much convenience. For example, the Internet’s application in e-business has made it possible to buy nearly everything on Alibaba and eBay. The Internet’s application in finance has made it possible for customers to conduct investment and borrow money from an online base, without the need to close the deal face to face. The application of Internet in social networking has made it possible to communicate with friends and families on an immediate base and made it possible to make friends from a long distance. The application of Internet in the field of journalism and communication has made it possible for people to be informed the exact moment something special happened. And the internet’s application in the field of academics has made it possible for scholars to share the fruit of human wisdom all over the world.
3.2 Negative sides brought by Internet
Despite the convenience brought by the development of Internet, it is Internet that has caused various troubles for human’s life. The application of Internet in business had made it easier for businessmen to counterfeit by sending consumers fake and shoddy products instead of the products shown on their Internet shops. The application of Internet in the field of finance has made it hard to run due diligent on every investment transaction. The application of Internet in social networking has made it hard for people to tell the authenticity of the person’s information who spoke to you on the other side of the chart box. The application of Internet in the field of journalism and communication has made it confusing for people to tell the difference between true news and fake news. According to Klotz (2004),most of the negative effects are brought by the Internet’s spreading of fake news.
4. Internet’s spreading of fake news
4.1 The fact of Internet’s spreading of fake news
At the time when Internet was firstly invented, all the information spread on the Internet was likely to be true, because of its limitation in academic and military field and its limited amount. However, along with more applicable fields of Internet, fakes news are becoming more and more common on the Internet, making Internet the representation for fake news at a time. The emergency of fake news bomb has three reasons.
Firstly, it comes from the needs to attract eyeballs. According to Burden (2008),it is the field of journalism and communication that has the highest possibility of the appearance of fake news. Because of the fact that it is becoming harder and harder for journalists to get the attention of audience, they begin to think about special tricks to attract eyeballs, like the making up of misleading or even false stories about celebrities, political events, business, accidents and crimes. For example, there used to be a video about a plane crash in Abbottabad, which was turned out to be totally faked by careful research on the weather and topography. Some recent attractive fake news happened in the process of 2016 US president election, like “Wikileaks CONFIRMS Hillary Sold Weapons to ISIS” by Political Insider and “Trump Gains Supports of Pope” by new-bots. Although some pieces of news are entirely faked from headings to the whole contents, some of the news are partly faked, or called misleading in this heading, for the attraction of more clicks. For example, articles with heading of “British guy dies after selfie gone wrong” and “Teenage girl tricked boyfriend into killing himself” are likely to induce you to visit the website of a book store named The Wild Detectives. This kind of fake news is not faked in its content, but faked in its connection from heading link to what you want to see and what you are offered to see actually.
Secondly, the need to spread fake news is to affect people in their decision making, usually in the field of finance and business. For example, misleading and even totally faked news about the boon in certain stocks are likely to be reported on financial tabloids, like a brand new reforming decision inside a slow-developing company and a secret M&A news from certain secret informant inside the management. The aim of these faked news are likely to mislead investors in their investment decision making progress, with a hope to attract more investment on certain company and an increase in the stock price. Compared to the fake news in the field of journalism and communication, fake news in financial and business fields are likely to be suspected with the intention of market manipulating, which is not only be blamed for the marking and spreading of faked news, but also be punished by Security Law.
The third kind of the emergency of fake news comes from harmful or harmless tricks. For example, the news of FIFA’s grouping information in 2013 WorldCup reported by a Mexico website, El Deforma, has been turned out to be a trick after being widely spread by multiple serious and traditional media, including Reuters. Despite the original intention of El Deforma is just to tell a joke about the World Cup, and save people from the tension in the waiting process for World Cup grouping information, it did cause some damages in the field of World Cup betting.
4.2 The damage caused by Internet’s spreading of fake news
Despite the intentions of fake news are not likely to be vicious and on purpose, it always causes some troubles for those receiving these news. As for the first type of fake news, the damages are the waste of time, as well as the difficulties for people to search right information. As for the second type, the damages are more serious than the first type, which is likely to cause financial and commercial loss by the misleading and fake news. Even more, some more serious problems can also be caused as a side effect of financial loss. As for the third type, the damages are not as serious as those caused by the second type, but are also likely to cause financial loss because of the collateral damage caused by fake news, like the wrong betting decisions misled by fake news of El Deforma.
5. Conclusion
In conclusion, it is true that the Internet is spreading fake news. Despite the fact that the spread of fake news has had a long history since old times, also known as rumor, it is the existence of internet that makes the spread in a larger and quicker scale. However, the fact of Internet’s spreading fake news cannot be the only base to judge the applications of Internet, there are also many positive sides of the application of Internet, including life convenience and business convenience. To better take advantage of the Internet, it is necessary for people to establish a sense of judgment, in order to tell the true and useful news from the fake ones by refereeing to other sources and a second thought about whether the news is true. Protected by a good judgment, people can enjoy the benefits brought by Internet instead of being hurt by fake news on the Internet.
