Death Analysis

Introduction

Death appears to be the specific topic that most people would avoid talking about and the great majority of human beings are afraid of death deep down their heart. When people have to involve others in the death topic, they will try to use a series of euphemism in place of it. Also, people will try their best to survive in their daily life because they are too terrified about it. It seems that people have not formed a correct attitude as for how to view death and how they should behave when they are in front of death. Therefore the following will mainly focus on death analysis, during which the works of Julian of Norwich and Thomas a Kempis will be applied to show how these two authors view death and what events these two authors hold that have led up to death as well as the prospect of the afterlife say about their theology and spirituality. It is hoped that people can learn something from this paper as for how to cope with death in their daily life, which is right the purpose of writing this paper.

Death Analysis

First and foremost comes Julian of Norwich’s view toward death and what he thinks that have helped contribute to death. To put it into more specifically, Julian of Norwich argues that death can be perceived as death in the body and death in the spirit, the so-called bodily vision and spiritual vision of death. And the differences of bodily vision and spiritual vision of death is that only the spiritual death can really make one die as a result while the bodily death may not definitely lead to death. That is to say, as long as one does not give up in spirit, then he/she may still survive surprisingly out of the power of spirit. But what is a pity to say is that if one chooses to surrender spiritually, then he/she is bound to death even though the bodily vision of death shows that he/she can still be saved.

From the perspective of Julian of Norwich, people who have seen the bodily vision of death will have the desire to be purged and saved by the mercy of God and God is able to give those people enough comfort and strength to save them from death (Julian of Norwich. 178). And what people can do if they would like to live longer is that they should deal well with three wounds in life: the wound of true contrition; the wound of loving compassion and the wound of longing with God (Julian of Norwich. 179). True contrition means that one should really realize his/her fault loyally and he/she will not commit the same fault again next time. Moreover, living to love God better and longer can make one live longer and also, to suffer together with God enables one to accept grace given by God. In addition, to seek and honor God through intermediaries and understand him as the goodness of everything (Julian of Norwich. 185) can take function for people to stay away from death more or less because people can learn from God to do things that are good. God’s power can be embodied by the fact that God’s blessed Passion for people can qualify them to be strong enough to fight against all the devils of hell and against all their spiritual enemies (Julian of Norwich. 182) so that people can successfully deal with death issues via their spiritual support. In addition, the Trinity’s being able to fill people’s heart full of the greatest joy (Julian of Norwich. 181) together with delight and certainty in people’s soul (Julian of Norwich. 188) can as well be seen as other powerful factors of God’s being almighty.

What is good news to say is that “God shows a spiritual sight of his familiar love” (Julian of Norwich. 183) toward all the people and “God has general love for all his fellow Christians in God has love towards everything that is” (Julian of Norwich. 192), from which we can know that everyone is equal before God and all people’s life is the same in face of God. So we can have a fair knowledge that everyone can live longer or shorter and their life span has not been decided yet. Whether one can live longer or shorter in the end depends on whether one can, as a matter of fact, acknowledge God well and correctly and whether one can learn to love and trust God. The prospect of the afterlife described by Julian of Norwich is bliss in heaven as long as one has loved God better and longer when they are alive.

With Julian of Norwich’s view toward death and what he thinks that have helped contribute to death being stated at length in the above, what follows is Thomas a Kempis’s view toward death and what he thinks that have helped contribute to death. Detailed speaking, Thomas a Kempis firstly states that what matters for whether one can have a long life is whether one has lived a good life and whether one has given thought not only to the present life but also to the life to come, otherwise it will just be vanity. That is to say, life quality will exert impacts on life length, which determines that people should pay attention to life quality while living. The same as Julian of Norwich, Thomas a Kempis also raises the importance of God so that people should love God and serve him alone (Thomas a Kempis. 4). And at the same time, Thomas a Kempis adds that it is better for people to withdraw from the crowd as Jesus so as to prevent risks (Thomas a Kempis. 5) in anyway when they are interacting with other people in the society. What is different is that Thomas a Kempis has emphasized more on personal efforts and behaviors in deciding one’s own life length rather than the influence of God.

In order for better illustration, Thomas a Kempis has put forward a series of issues that one can do themselves for the sake of their life, which can be summarized into the following ones: to despise the world and draw daily nearer the kingdom of heaven (Thomas a Kempis. 5); to withdraw heart from the love of visible things and direct affections to invisible things (Thomas a Kempis. 5); to avoid being too secure and exalted in pride (Thomas a Kempis. 6); to watch yourself at all times, and correct yourself before you correct your friends (Thomas a Kempis. 7); to insist to your good resolution (Thomas a Kempis. 8) and do whatever you think is worthwhile (Thomas a Kempis. 11); to order every deed and thought as though today were the day of death (Thomas a Kempis. 8); better to avoid sin than to escape death (Thomas a Kempis. 8); not to be influenced by bribes and excuses, judges with justice (Thomas a Kempis. 10); etc. All of these items are introduced for people to live a good life and people can really make it to live longer. What can not be denied is that to achieve all those items will be rather hard work, but people should still make efforts to realize them one by one.

Besides the above, Thomas a Kempis as well claims the significance of holy contrition and true devotion on contrition of heart (Thomas a Kempis. 6), which has also been stated by Julian of Norwich. Thomas a Kempis puts it in this way that “No one is worthy of heavenly comfort, unless they have diligently exercised themselves in holy contrition (Thomas a Kempis.6)”, from which we can easily predict the necessity for people to have heartfelt contrition. Furthermore, these two authors have both depicted the importance of suffering together with God and it is described by Thomas a Kempis that “consider yourself unworthy of God’s comfort, but rather deserving of much suffering (Thomas a Kempis. 7)”. From this, we can acquire that it is a must for people to learn to endure because life is unexpected of difficulties at any time (Thomas a Kempis. 11) and people should prepare themselves well for those difficulties. And the prospect of the afterlife described by Thomas a Kempis is freedom from God and one can finally free themselves from all the worldly issues in the due time.

Conclusion

After knowing about how Julian of Norwich and Thomas a Kempis view death and what events they hold that have led up to death as well as the prospect of the afterlife say about their theology and spirituality, we human beings should learn to treat death with a right attitude and mentality. After all, death can not be controlled by us and we can do nothing about it but readily accept the coming of it. Only in this way can we really live without being influenced by it and can we live a happy life without worrying about death in any way. As far as I am concerned, will spare no efforts to live a good and qualified life every day and suppose each day as the last day to live without complaining the inequality in the life length of different people. It is betted that can be well prepared whenever the moment for death comes and won’t find that there are still much undone at that specific moment.
