Personal hatreds and professional ethics

Introduction

One of These Days described how a dentist restrained his hatreds on the Mayor who killed twenty people in the town and finally treated him and reduced his pain. At first, the dentist refused to treat the Mayor due to the slaughter he had conducted, while the dentist chose to treat him finally after a miserable series of psychological processes. All in all, the story explored the conflict between personal hatreds and professional ethics.

TIE: Perspective 1

The dentist was dedicated to his career. He carefully arranged his dental instruments “as if they were on display”. He was quite acquainted to the operations and was highly focused on his work in “the way deaf people have of looking”. These details were hinting that patients who came here could get properly treated. Actually these details were emphasized purposefully to create the huge discrepancy with the dentist’s attitude towards the Mayor as stated below.

TIE: Perspective 2

The discrepancy, as mentioned above, emerged when the peace was interrupted by the dentist’s son who told him that the Mayor was waiting to be treated. The dentist’s response, “Tell him I'm not here”, was weird. He tried to ignore the existence of the Mayor by focusing on his work. When his son told him the lie was nailed by the Mayor, the dentist still had no intention to let him in. Rather, he continued to turn a deaf ear, until his son said that the Mayor threatened to shoot the dentist if he did not help. On hearing this, the dentist “stopped pedaling the drill”, and it seemed that he decided to stop what he was doing and started to treat the Mayor. Unexpectedly, he “pulled the lower drawer of the table” where a revolver was lying. And he said to his son, “Tell him to come and shoot me”. These details illustrated several things. Firstly, the dentist hated the Mayor; otherwise he should not have given such apathy and indifference to a patient. Secondly, the hatred could be related to killing, and the dentist could probably kill the Mayor using the revolver. These details were significant in drawing forth the following contexts and laying the foundation for the truth to come out.

TIE: Perspective 3

Personal hatreds and professional ethics fought against each other in the dentist’s mind, and finally personal hatreds gave in. The Mayor was allowed after he made the threat, and he was even too painful to shave his “five-day-old beard”. The dentist could detect this pain, which might have somehow triggered his sympathy. Anyways, he was a dentist facing a miserable patient. The dentist told the Mayor that “it has to be without anesthesia”, which was left to the readers to figure out if that was reflecting the truth or just a purposeful punishment. The Mayor accepted. During the treatment, the dentist gave no smile, and did everything “without hurrying”. Perhaps the dentist was still hesitating if he should save him or kill him. The decision was made when the dentist said, “Now you'll pay for our twenty dead men”. How should the Mayor pay, by his life? It was not the case. The dentist wanted him to pay by the huge pains he suffered from his tooth’s being pulled out without anesthesia. How should we interpret this? On one hand, the dentist said that “without rancor, rather with a bitter tenderness”. On the other hand, when the dentist gave the Mayor a cloth to dry his tears, it also showed that the dentist tried to treat him as a poor normal patient rather a ferocious murderer, at least now. Furthermore, the dentist reminded that a rest and salt water could help reduce the pain. All the details were saying, even not explicitly, that the dentist chose to set personal hatreds aside when he was performing his duties as a dentist.

Conclusion

Personal hatreds or affections and professional ethics sometimes conflict with each other. In real life, a good practice when performing duties is that, professional ethics should be put in priority. For instance, a policeman should not help conceal evidence by taking advantage of his position just because the criminal is his good friend; and a stock broker, should not make orders at unfavorable prices on purpose to cause losses for his client just because there is some hatred between them.
