This is Our World

Dorothy Allison (“This is Our World”, by Dorothy Allison) does not consider all imaginative work to be art. She scorns the “television sitcom imaginations of the illustrators who make magazine advertisements”. What might she mean by that? Write an essay that looks closely at Alison’s value judgements and apply them to an analysis of the value of the art that most people embrace in today’s United States.

In the short story of Dorothy Allison, “This is Our World”, she thought that art should provoke emotions and reveal people of their true selves. Allison depicted a magazine advertisement where “a small child high in the air dropping toward the upraised arms of a waiting figure” (Allison, 2002). It was supposed to describe the love of a father to his daughter, while Allison scorned it as “television sitcom imaginations of the illustrators who make magazine advertisements”. The reason of why Allison thought it that way was the world in her eyes being cruel and meaner than we think which was depressed and frightened. Allison was born in a poor working class family, thus the society seemed an unpleasant place for her. What she saw from art was her true self, for instance those who kill, murder and rape others in her stories. The advertisement promoting safety and hapiness find no echo from Allison.

In “This is Our World”, Allison proposed that people, even for those from the same background, same nation and same working class. When Allison’s mother was baptized, there were three boys experiencing the same situation in the church. Different from others, Alisson and the three boys all had difficulty considered the moment of baptism as holy, while trying really hard to stop themselves from laughing. The value of art lies in the various ways of its interpretation, instead of what the author tries to convey, through which people’s emotions are provoked by art piece. When Allison depicted the painting of Jesus on baptismal font, she said that “What I wanted was a life-size, sweaty painting, one of which Jesus looked as hopeful as a young girl—something other worldly and peculiar, but kind of wonderful at the same time” (Allison, 2002). This ilustrates Allison’s believe towards art. Art provokes emotions via desperate figures and tragedy. Emmett Till, an African-American teenager who was lynched was a good example for this. After going through a huge pain, he had no chance to fully rest peacelly in death. The picture of his provokes the viewers’ emotions dramatically, thus prevent them from conducting cruel behaviors to others (Whitfield, 1991).

Another value of art, based on Allison, is “provoking more questions than answers so as to make people think about what they rarely want to think about at all”. Ashraf Rushdy put forward a similar point of view, which is that change can occur through photos, one of the forms of art. Art offers us a chance to stop and connect with our philosophical mind. Photographs enables viewers to see the truth, Rushdy said (Rushdy, 2008). Allison, likewise, claimed that art reveals truth via telling stories. They are the evidences of the particular events and the conceptions of the authors. The story art tell is what our inner selves are afraid to admit. The three boys who dare not to laugh during being baptized were afraid to show that they did not consider the moment as holy, since it will look different from others. People try to remain in the same mechanism of others in case of being repelled by the society. Allison, therefore, stated that art let us see the true emotions that are suppressed in the inner selves. In order to coexist with the society harmonially, the emotions have to be held back.

In a word, in “This is Our World”, Allison illustrated several stories to exemplify that art will provoke people’s emotions and reveal them of their true selves. People from the same background, same nation and same working class will perceive art in various ways. However, they dare not to speak out their true feelings in order to coexist with the society harmonially.
