This article will discuss an anti-war poem named “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale, the modern American poet. This 12-line poem which has been published in the July 1918 issue of Harper’s Magazine. The poem shows Teasdale’s focus on philosophy and social themes. The creation of this poem derives directly from the spiritual disillusionment that Teasdale faces the destruction made by the First World War to human beings.

Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) is one of the most charming lyric poets in the United States. Her poetry has a feature of classic simplicity and deep serenity. Her poems are pure and straightforward. Teasdale was born in a middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri. Although she has not received any formal education, she is hard-working and self-taught.

Teasdale is known for her romantic lyric poems which are full of delicate emotions and the rhythm of dynamic music. This is closely related to her love of music and sentimentality by nature. As a continuation of her meticulous style, “There Will Come Soft Rains” is an anti-war poem different from her other lyric poems.

The poem has six stanzas, each including two lines. Every stanza has a rhyming couplet in irregular tetrameters. From the different angles of birds, frogs, and trees in nature, the poet describes the self-destruction of humans and the disregard of nature. Even if humans destruct themselves and disappear from the planet forever, nature will still exist. The poet uses the rhetorical devices such as synaesthesia and personification to describe the natural things, so that the readers feel that nature is dynamic and lively. As far as the appearances go, nature is alienated from human warfare. But the depiction of the tremor of wild plum trees (line 4) reveals the connection between nature and human war, that is, the threat of war to nature. This depiction reflects the fact that nature’s attitude towards war is both disgusting and powerless. The changes from dynamism to tremor to disregard of nature show silent protests and opposition to the war. The devastating effects of the war and the destruction of people’s lives cannot help doubting the significance of conquest. After the end of the First World War, Teasdale has written this poem to arouse the peace consciousness of mankind.

The phrase “will come” of the title and the first line of poem indicates that the scene depicted takes place in the future which it implies that the future is actually after a season - when spring comes again until the end of the poem. Soft rains ( line 1) soften the soil in spring and wake up the grass. Then more natural elements are introduced into the poem, such as frogs, pools, and plum trees. The frogs singing at night (line 3) reveal their indifferent attitude toward the surrounding world. They enjoy their lives freely and do not care about the human world around them which are explained in line 7.

In the first two stanzas, nature has its own mastery of time. The frequent uses of the conjunction “and” and the useof the verb ending “ing” illustrate the ability of continuing its time which is not interfered by human behavior. In addition, the rhymes such as “ground” and “sound”; “night” and “white”also indicate that nature is capable of supporting itself without being affected by humans. However, the repeated uses of “and” keep the readers in suspense about what will happen in the future. However, there has been no changes in nature.

Robin feathers are a kind of prediction because fire is part of the war. The purpose of the phrase “feathery fire” (line 5) is to describe the beauty and harmony of nature contrasting with the scenes of terror. The sixth line of the poem reinforces the description of the animals’ joy and indifference when humans are in chaos. Robins sit on the fence and whistle because they have not the same fears as humans.

The first six lines of the poem describe the livelihood of the birds and frogs. But the idyllic scene is used to pave the way for the sadness of the latter half and the narration of the absurd and disorderly behavior of human beings. Whether animals or wild plum trees will not become victims of human violence, because they can keep away from the war.

The last six lines have undergone dramatic changes in the tone and theme, from the rural landscape of animals and plants to the war. These verses also explain why the poet is so happy and carefree about wild life. Animals do not care about the consequences and ignore the destruction which humans have suffered from. The most powerful comment is that neither animals nor plants will care about the complete disappearance of human beings (line 10).

If humanity really disappears completely, then in the spring it is completely unknown(lines11-12). This harsh assumption shows that the devastating consequences of human-to-human war will not cause the same resonance to nature. The implicit but refined rhyme “dawn” and “gone” indicates the inconsistency between humans and nature.

When soft rains come, there is a hope that they can take away all the filthiness of the war. This poem cannot be understood easily for the hidden meanings. It may reveal the expectation of humans’ reflection and the simplest human desire - to live in peace.
