Blowback is a term invented to describe the likelihood that our covert operations in other people's countries would result in retaliations against Americans, civilian and military, at home and abroad. In its most vigorous definition, blowback is not limited to the reactions carried out by the U.S. government, and is considered a paraphrase to indicate a nation reaps what it sows. This term originated from a classified government document in the Central Intelligence Agency's post-action report on the secret overthrow of the Iranian government in 1953, which started to circulate among students of international relations. (Johnson, 2004)

One can also see the manifestation of blowback in the film Battle for Haditha. In the film, ordinary people in Iraq are no different, even nice, to Islamic militants originally, as we can see from the film scenes when Islamic women go shopping in the market and the owner even allows them to get close and observe the chicken cage. When Iraq soldiers purchase DVDs with Islam storekeeper, they even play jokes with each other, having no awareness at all that he is going to start a boom attack. When Islamic militants start to attack ordinary people, they try to stay neutral and to obey the orders of the insurgents by, according to the film, concealing the existence of bombs to the U.S. marines. However, the whole attitude reverse after their families have been massacred by the U.S. marines and more ordinary people join the insurgents, fighting for country independence and personal revenge. The survivors, as exposed in the film, listen to and agree with the values and propositions of the insurgent leader.

Life is neither easy for the other side of the war. For veterans who have participated in the war, many of them suffer through their life posttraumatic stress disorder. According to the radio broadcast A Veteran’s Wife, there are a variety of approaches to use in treatment to them, ranging from social support systems, medications and physiological treatments. However, the veterans in the film enjoy almost nothing of these; what welcomes them is refuse even to see a doctor from the commander, and the judge from the court for murder. The filmmaker, in my point of view, is quite sympathetic to the veterans. He makes an effort to present the physiological suffer and mental torture veterans go through as aftermath, as well as the blame they have taken for the commanders.

The film also helps building a sociological imagination in terms of personal troubles and social issues. As far as I am concerned, initially, the social issues are started by personal troubles, whether the trivial dissatisfaction of the retired soldier who explode a bomb, or the broken heart, anger and grief of the U.S. marines who have just lost teammates. Then, as course advances, personal troubles and social issues escalate and interweave, and one can never set apart. This is clear when you see all the mourning families become terrorists.

Johnson wrote somewhere discussing the ignorance we are on what we are like and the role central government plays in that. (Johnson, 2004) I agree with this statement. High commanders sit safe and sound back in Washington, making beautiful while cold policies, setting universal while indiscriminate procedures. (Zimbardo, 2007) This policies and procedures sound perfect to most Americans, and the underlying sins are never revealed, which incurred increasing hatred and revenge home and abroad, leaving the country isolated by more and more nations.
