A couple of years ago, a Chinese advertisement caused an international discussion about racial discrimination. In the advertisement, when a Chinese woman prepares laundry in front of the washing machine, a black man suddenly appears, the woman points with a finger to indicate that the black man come closer, but then he was stuffed into the washing machine. After washing, the woman was very happy to see a man with white skin out from the washing machine. This advertisement is clearly racially discriminating. However, when I first saw the advertisement video online, I did not think too much about it. Being much more aware of the issues now, I find that the advertisement highlights the discrimination of certain ethnicities and skin colors by the Chinese people. Through my various racial experiences, I want to address the issue of racial discrimination in China that may become a much more serious problem in the future.

There has some interesting phenomenon in China, the attitude of part of Chinese people's racism is obvious, but if you mention this to the Chinese, more than nine of the ten Chinese people are firmly opposed to this accusation, they will also fiercely refute and state that there is no such thing as racial discrimination in China, but this isn’t true. Personally, sometimes I have observed when a Chinese call degrading names of the Japanese, Indians, and Africans simply because they are different. Every time I hear about such racial discrimination, I feel sad and surprised. I also feel obliged to refute their opinions because their comments are due to the ignorant stereotype about other races. Last time when I heard a Chinese student labeling African people as “lazy”, I asked him: “Do you have any African friend? Have you even spoken to any African people before? Please don’t make such comments anymore because you are making me very uncomfortable.” He simply shrugged and did not say a word. I knew deep down, he was still holding onto racist thoughts.

My racial experiences were from the internet and social media, because I have never encountered a physical case of discrimination. Few years ago, I was watching an online video of a Chinese professor giving a lecture on the history of overseas Chinese. The professor said that the tropical peoples in Southeast Asia are very lazy, so the diligent Chinese have made their fortunes in these countries. Some countries even have half of their wealth in the hands of the Chinese. In countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, the local Chinese have emerged to be the social elite in society. The Chinese culture is also the most civilized in Asia, so the superior position of Chinese in Southeast Asia is higher than that of the local citizens. As I listened, I felt that such arguments were no different between racial discrimination.

So, I couldn’t take it anymore and commented: "I’m also a Chinese, but I don't agree with this kind of racist speech. First of all, there is no civilization higher than another civilization, and the civilizations of all the different nations in the world are equal. Even though the Chinese may have longer history, it doesn’t make the Chinese race superior in anyway. Moreover, it is unfair to accuse any people with the label of lazy. Finally, it is even more ridiculous for the Chinese to be first-class citizens in Southeast Asia. The white race superiority theory has always been condemned by the Chinese, yet the Chinese are proud of their superiority to other ethnic groups in private, this is not how a civilized people should behavior."

My opinion raised heated discussion. Some users have repeatedly denounced me for insulting the Chinese. They said that the Chinese can show their brilliance in foreign countries through their hard work. This of course shows that the Chinese are more intelligent than the locals. So, I asked them: "If one day the overseas Chinese in Western Europe and North America are rich in their wealth, does it mean that the Chinese civilization in these countries will override the local Western civilization? Will the Chinese be the first-class citizen who is superior to the locals?"

Someone responded: "There is no doubt that after China's increasing strength, the overseas Chinese will also be supported, and their social status will be significantly improved naturally." I was shocked. In China, there are people who couldn't move beyond the beliefs of national superiority to other ethnic groups, they would ignore the concept of national and racial equality throughout the world. I believe that if a teacher in the West publicly publicizes the theory of racial superiority in class and devalues other peoples, such claims will cast a shadow over their career and they may will even be dismissed from the university. It is shocking how a university professor in China can be so narrow-minded, and supported by so many. The saddest thing that the Chinese often make claims about the rural people's poor quality, ugliness of the Africans, laziness of the Southeast Asians, etc. and this is too ironic as well.

From my personal racial experiences in China, both in person and online, I think the problem of racism in China needs more attention. The developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America have always been friends of China. However, it is surprising how some Chinese people have such despise against our allies. This racial prejudice is now rare even in the West, where racism is only one of the major social conflicts. Nowadays, racism is not a major issue in China because we are mostly one race. I believe nowadays most people’s mindset in China are like when I first saw the racism washing machine ad, feeling irrelevant, neutral and uncaring. However, in the more globalized future, racism in China is becoming alarming. Nationalism and arrogance may become the major obstacle for China to connect to the world in the future. In response to such a situation, the Chinese government, media, and education system must pay more attention to promoting racial equality in society.
