So we can have a fair knowledge that many writers will try to compose surprise endings for their stories as often as possible, leading to their stories’ becoming a success in the end. The same case also goes to the American author called Kate Chopin and she is good at setting surprise endings for her stories. Therefore the following will be the analysis of her usage of surprise endings in her created stories and three of her stories will be taken as examples for better illustration. The aforementioned three stories are respectively “The Storm”, “Desiree’s Baby” and “The Story of an Hour”, which will be elaborated on one by one in the below.

Kate Chopin and Surprise Endings

   First and foremost comes the analysis of the surprising ending for “The Storm”. In this story, a strong and unexpected storm left Calixta at home alone with her husband Bobint and their four-year-old son Bibi being forced to remain at Friedheimer’s store. During the storm, Calixta’s past lover called Alce Laballire happened to ask for a shelter against the storm on the gallery of Calixta’s home. After they met each other, they could not resist their lust for each other and they indulged themselves within it. Here the sentence that “She was a revelation in that dim, mysterious chamber; as white as the couch she lay upon” can indicate that the beauty of Calixta is the symbolism for the origin of people’s lust. So we may have a fair knowledge that after the storm they two may decide to strive for their love relationship or some other behaviors like that so as to live with each other afterwards. And we may assume that the relationship between Bobint and Calixta may simply collapse because Calixta has already fallen in love with another man and they won’t be happy if they two continue to be with one another. Also, we may not successfully expect that Alce Laballire would have a wife and Alce and his wife as well go along well with each other.

But as a result, Kate Chopin describes it in this way that after the storm, everything returned normal again and every one was happy. The author puts it in this way that “Bobint and Bibi began to relax and enjoy themselves, and when the three seated themselves at table they laughed much and so loud that anyone might have heard them as far as Laballire’s”, from which we can find that these three family members all enjoyed themselves much and they were satisfied with their state. As for Alce Laballire, he wrote a loving letter to his wife Clarisse at Biloxi which was filled with tender solicitude and he expressed his miss and care toward her. In the opposite, his wife Clarisse was extremely happy when she received her husband’s love letter and she still knew nothing about the affair between her husband and Calixta. Much to our surprise in this story is that the affair between Calixta and Alce Laballire is not recognized by others and it seems that it has not happened at all.

With the surprise ending in “The Storm” being mentioned at length in the above, what follows is the analysis of the surprise ending in “Desiree’s Baby”. To put it into more specifically, Desiree evaluated her husband Armand in this way that “Armand is the proudest father in the parish, I believe, chiefly because it is a boy, to bear his name; though he says not – that he would have loved a girl as well. But I know it isn’t true. I know he says that to please me”, from which we can get that Armand loves Desiree and their baby quite much and he will pay most of his attention and care to them in the rest of his life. Also, Desiree will feel rather pleasant and happy with her husband’s love and her baby’s accompany and we may hold that Desiree will really live a happy life in approaching days. And we will assume that Desiree’s baby will keep getting his father’s love in his later growth process and he will all the time be his father’s pride. And Desiree’s insisting on being together with Armand without taking any regard of her mother Madame Valmonde’s opposition is supposed to bring her a happy family life with Desiree so that she does not make a wrong decision at the first place.

But what is out of our expectation and out of Desiree’s expectation is that Armand regarded being white as so important that when he realized that Desiree and their baby was not white, he began to keep a cold and indifferent attitude toward Desiree and their baby. It is stated by the author that “Moreover he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name”, from which we can know that Armand holds that because Desiree and their baby is not white and they two have actually brought shame and injury toward his home and his name. Even worse, what Armand hopes is that Desiree and their baby can quickly disappear is his life so as not to further disgrace his home and his name any more. Thus, it can be easily understood why at the end of the story, Desiree asked whether Armand would like her to leave, Armand said yes and he had not said even a word to detain her. In this sense, I have to say that originally it is predicted to be a happy family of three but the surprise ending created by Kate Chopin simply gives it a bleak and dismal atmosphere at last.

Last but not the least comes the analysis of the surprise ending in “The Story of an Hour”. When the story firstly began, Mrs. Mallard suffered from a heart trouble and she was again attacked by her husband Brently Mallard’s death. Though she was greatly sad and hard to endure in the very beginning, she survived from it after appropriate adjustment and she began to accept the truth of her husband’s death as had been witnessed by her husband’s friend Richards. So we will naturally deem that Mrs. Mallard will later on live a single life without husband and ends her life in this way. And it is believed that her husband’s death will gradually fade in her life and it won’t be mentioned neither. However, Kate Chopin is so skillful in creating surprise endings that she later describes the return of Mrs. Mallard’s husband. As a matter of the fact, the survival of Mrs. Mallard’s husband is already a great shock while the greater surprise is that Mrs. Mallard just dies at seeing the return of her husband. It can be understood in this way that Mrs. Mallard can survive from the dual blow of the heart trouble and her husband’s death at the same time, the truth that she will die for her husband’s return is much to our surprise. Another surprise point in this story is the interpretation of freedom and Mrs. Millard has considered that her husband’s death can give her complete freedom and she is welcome to such freedom, which can be seen from the sentence that “There was a feverish triumph in her eyes and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory”.

Conclusion

To sum up, Kate Chopin is really skillful in composing surprise endings for her works so that her stories are able to leave a deep impression on us readers to a great extent. Personally speaking, I can feel the power of surprise endings in arousing the attention of readers to a great degree and I have made a decision that I will later learn how to compose surprise endings for my own story if possible.
