A case study of culture from a cross-cultural perspective

I want to choose Mr. Harry as the object of cultural case study. He is an American doing business in Japan. He and two other representatives met with their Japanese counterparts and introduced them to each other. After introducing each other, Americans take off their jackets, roll up their sleeves and try to become more friendly (aizun arifin, 2014). But the Japanese can't understand them well. As a result, the business transaction between Harry and the Japanese failed, which is the result of cross-cultural misunderstanding.

In fact, Harry's behavior of "taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves" is to say "make us more comfortable. My name is Harry, and you?". Harry wanted to be friends with his Japanese counterparts, and from the Japanese point of view, his behavior was aggressive, leading to misunderstanding between them. Members of a culture have clearly identifiable behavior patterns, similar value systems, social organization systems, characteristics and world views (decapua & wintergerst, 2016, P. 14), which shows that behavior patterns in different cultural backgrounds are different from each other.

As for Harry, he just started from his own cultural background and didn't realize that this behavior may have a completely different connotation in the Japanese cultural background. Therefore, he will not realize that in order to avoid cultural misunderstanding, he must put on Japanese shoes while taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves. However, the fact that human behavior occurs in different cultural and social backgrounds (decapua & wintergerst, 2016, P. 72) shows that human behavior should be explained together with its social and cultural background.

Personally, the similarity between Harry and me is that we are not familiar with Japanese culture, and we may unknowingly offend the Japanese. But the difference between us is that I have learned some knowledge about cross-cultural communication. I am sure there will be different things for a certain behavior. Therefore, when there is such a misunderstanding, I will immediately explain to them that the purpose of "take off your coat and roll up your sleeves" is to be more friendly in order to quickly solve this misunderstanding. I won't act like Harry because he doesn't know why the Japanese can't understand his friendship. He just asks "what's the problem?". I believe that I may be better able to deal with this situation than Harry, which will help me successfully do business with them.

After learning Harry's case, I can apply it to language classroom teaching. First, I will design activities to let students guess what specific behaviors mean in different cultural backgrounds. In this way, students can well understand the different connotations of the same behavior in different cultural backgrounds. Second, I want students to participate in a series of role-playing activities, in which they must play a person from different cultural backgrounds. Hope to enhance students' cross-cultural awareness to a certain extent. There is no doubt that when training new teachers, I will tell them the benefits of the above two activities.
