Mexicans believe that death is the beginning of the next journey of life, and it is a pure happiness. As a result, on November 1st and 2nd every year, they celebrate the day of the dead. Before the celebration, on 31st October, people go to the market to buy and prepare elements for the dead. These items are placed on an altar and presented to the deceased. Specifically, people need to buy candles, which means to guide the souls to altars. Then, people prepare cempazuchitl, a kind of flower, which is a symbol of Day of the dead. People scatter flowers on the ground and make a path for the soul. Besides, skulls and skeletons are also essential elements. The images of skulls are in different sorts of colors and imitating the dead. Meanwhile, the skulls are made of sugar and have smiling faces. In addition to the sugar skulls, there are some other typical food for the celebration, such as bread of the dead, mole and grasshopper. On the top of the bread for the dead, there is a decoration like shape of a skull. Hence, it is used for representing the dead. Then, mole is a traditional Mexican food that uses a unique spicy chocolate sauce. Grasshopper stands for truth and honesty. Eating grasshopper means losing those virtues and expressing the yearning for the dead people. After that, a photo of the deceased while he was alive should be prepared for the celebration in order to honor the death. What is more, some religious things are needed, for instance, paper cutouts in the shapes of skulls and a type of incense. People believe that the religious things can be used for communicating with the dead. After all the preparation, on November 1st, the All Saints Day, people celebrate the kids dead in their childhoods. Next, on November 2nd, Day of the dead, people celebrate the dead adults. The days are like a big party, so people get together and celebrate. Especially, there is a tradition of dressing up and then going through the streets, so people wear different costumes and masks. They emulate the dead when they were alive and honor them.
The day is crucial for the family. Before the celebration, relatives of the dead should prepare together, like cleaning the tomb and decorating the cemetery. During the day, they get together to have meals and hold a party. Due to the festival, people have chances to have fun with families.
In China, there is a similar traditional festival called Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-sweeping Day. It is in early April every year, and the specific time varies according to the lunar calendar. Like Day of the dead, the aim of this festival is commemorating dead people. However, there are some differences between Tomb-sweeping Day and Day of the dead. For example, in ancient China, people could not cook with fire three days before Tomb-sweeping day, so they could only eat cold food for the festival. Nowadays, this tradition is still practiced in some parts of China. Also, there is no special food for Qingming Festival. People only prepare flowers and fruits for the dead rather than sugar skulls or bread. In general, the attitudes of treating death are totally different in China and Mexico. Chinese regard death as a matter of sorrow. In other words, in Chinese opinion, the essence of death is loss. Therefore, Chinese people do not treat this day as a party or happiness.
