Research Essay
Every year, millions of species disappear from the earth. Some even say that all species, including human beings, may be extinct one day. Then the question emerges about what is the point of the conservation of species. Why should we care about the loss in wildlife? Is the accelerating rate of extinction of any matter to human beings? To answer these questions, it is necessary to assess the value of species. In 1947, King classified the value of wild animals into the following six categories: recreational values, aesthetic values, educational and scientific values, biological values, sociocultural values, and commercial values. Among these values, educational and scientific values are the most profound one that has influenced the human society in fundamental ways. This essay focuses on the various scientific values of the conservations of species. The scientific merits of species conservation include theoretical research, applied sciences, and bionics.
Based on the more recent research results, Toussaint (2005) supplemented the classification of King's value composition and proposed a more comprehensive wildlife value system. Toussaint refers to the scientific merits as the value of education and science. He believes that it should include both the value of people's familiar species, as well as the value of a large number of unsystematic studies of species that are not yet familiar to us. Conservation of species has the value of science, philosophy and education. The scientific value mainly lies in the fact that species are the objects of scientific research. Ecologists, physiologists, pathologists, statisticians, sociologists, and anthropologists all gain an understanding of the subject matter of the field from studying different species (Toussaint, 2005). Since studying wildlife species is a science that studies life and is the basis for understanding our own purpose, values, aesthetics and future, its research results are of great value to scientific and philosophical development.
The first aspect of scientific merits is the theoretical research. The scientific value of wildlife is that they are the subject of scientific research. Ecologists, physiologists, pathologists, group statisticians, sociologists, and anthropologists all acquire knowledge of the subject from the study of animals. Basic theoretical research is to reveal the inherent nature and laws of wild species. The study of ancient animal fossils has helped people understand the long evolutionary process of nature. For example, anthropologists study the remains of ancient primates as well as living primates to formulate theories on how human beings have evolved into the modern form (Guarino, 2017). The scientific research of wild animals also contributes to the most basic principle of biology. The most famous example is the research on the species conducted by Charles Darwin. Through the study of existing organisms and their fossils, the relationship between animals and plants and their process of evolution were revealed. Without the diversity of species, it would be impossible for Darwin to reveal the laws of evolution.
The science merits of the conservation of species is also dependent on the scarcity and other values of the species as well. The giant panda is one of the most precious animals in the world. It is mainly distributed in the individual mountainous areas of Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces in China. It is considered a national treasure of China and also a valuable research subject for scientists. The scientific merits of giant pandas are mainly reflected in the uniqueness of evolution and the endangerment of species. As a species surviving from ancient times, giant pandas have evolved from carnivores to current vegetarians (Kaplan, 2015). In the millions of years, many larger and stronger animals have disappeared in the region, and giant pandas remain tenacious. The study of giant pandas is mainly focused on the evolution of giant pandas, the study of panda habitats, the artificial breeding of giant pandas, genetic research, field survey, etc.
The second major aspect of merits is applied science. Through studying wildlife species, major discoveries and technological development achievements can be obtained. After the application of these technological development results, they have obtained obvious social and economic benefits. The applied scientific research of wild species is the discoveries and research results obtained by studying the biological characteristics and mechanisms of them. These technologies have gained obvious social and economic benefits after being applied, such as the use of wild animals for medicine, agriculture technology, etc. In the medicinal field, among all the modern drugs developed by the human being, there are at least a quarter of them that contain extractions from natural plant species (Duke, 1993). Meanwhile, there are still countless new species waiting to be studied and applied to help human beings in certain ways. Without the diversity and large number of species, applied sciences would bear great loss with the reduced source of inspiration.
Animal species and human beings have evolved together in the long river of history. Animals and humans must undergo similar processes of birth, growth, breeding, aging, and death. There are many physiology and genetic commonalities between humans and other species. Precious and endangered species provide valuable experimental materials for scientific research, and promote the development of disciplines such as biology, genetics, medicine, ecology, archaeology, etc. Even seemingly “useless” species such as mice and fruit flies are of significant research values (Kulikowski, 2012). With the help of studying these species, humans have been able to successfully achieve the transplantation of the heart, liver, cornea and other organs, control and treat different cancers by various means, and easily achieve artificial breeding of embryonic test-tube babies. All of these great medical achievements would not be possible without the cumulative research on different species.
Finally, wildlife also has important significance in bionics. Nature has inspired human beings to achieve great things. In bionics, the principle, structure, and function of the species are examined and imitated. Based on these principles, new equipment, tools and technologies are invented to improve production, learning and our daily lives. The shape and flying function of birds have inspired people to develop aircrafts. The body and swimming ability of fish and sea animals, especially the shape and skin function of the dolphins, inspire the design of boats, submarines, etc. to be more and more reasonable. The study of the shock resistance features of the woodpecker's head lead to the invention of anti-collision helmets for humans, the study of the durability of animal bone joints on human mechanical friction, the bat's sonar acceptance and human radar research, etc. are all of great bionic significance.
In conclusion, the scientific merits of species conservation are interdisciplinary in nature, involving wildlife management, ecology, biology, economics, anthropology, sociology and other multidisciplinary fields. Theoretical research is the first aspect of the scientific merits. The direct observation and study of the different species contribute to the discovery of the laws of evolution, the laws of genetics, etc. Applied sciences is also an important scientific merit, as wild species help scientist develop new drugs. Finally, different species are also a great source of inspiration for bionics. Although animal and plant species are of great scientific value, among all the species that exist on earth, only a tiny proportion of them are thoroughly studied. In other words, there is still huge potential in studying these unexplored species. Faced with the threats of climate change and global warming, these species are disappearing at an increasing rate. This is why the conservation of species is of critical importance for science, and for the development of human’s future.
