Reflections on the employment of child Labour

Recently, a series of videos in China have attracted people's attention. These videos describe child workers in factories in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. The children in that factory work 28 days a month and more than 12 hours a day. If they stop working, they may be beaten by their master. The youngest child there is only 13 years old. Various news on the Internet, government actions and millions of people have expressed their anger at the use of child labour and the great difficulties in solving this problem. But the question is, do they really want to be saved?

When I was at home, every time we went to a restaurant, my father would ask the waiter's age. We always take pleasure in this, guess their age, and see who can guess right or almost right. One day, we went to a restaurant near our apartment. There was a 16-year-old boy serving us and a table. Soon after, we heard a voice from behind. According to their argument, we know that the boy mistook another glass of beer on their check. He repeated "I'm sorry" many times, but they just didn't let him go and kept swearing at him. Finally, the manager came and gave them a big discount to deal with the dispute. In fact, I have known child labor for a long time. My parents told me that they are children who can't afford tuition. They have no choice but to work at a very young age. However, from that day on, I paid more attention to the problem of child labor. I knew that if I didn't study it deeply, I would never know the truth. The government seems to be trying to hide something, but hiding doesn't mean that specific things don't exist at all.

As we all know, China is now a developing country, and its development needs the participation of the vast majority of labor force. I know that we need a large number of workers to meet the needs of social development, but this is by no means a reason to use child labour in any way. On the above question, why should I ask "do they really want to be saved?", This can well show that there is not only a problem with child labour, but also more work needs to be done. If you think saving children in the factory is the way to solve this problem, you are very wrong.

When I was 2 years old, my mother went back to work and a nanny took care of me until I went to kindergarten. Later, she returned to her hometown, a poor village far from my home. Last year, my parents and I went there to see her. I was completely shocked by the scene there. There are no cars in the village and the houses are short and dilapidated. Besides, there are no other electrical appliances in the house except electric lights and an old TV. At that time, she was the only one in the family because her husband had died and all her other family members went out to work, including her granddaughter. Her granddaughter is only 14 years old. She told us that the girl works in the same factory as her parents. We really sympathized with her experience. We gave her some money before leaving the village before dark. On the way home, my father further told me that there was no school in the village and her parents could not afford the tuition in the city. If she doesn't go to work, her parents' salary may not be enough to cover all the family necessities. Therefore, work is the only thing she can do to help her family and support herself.

Overall, do they really want to be saved? It depends on what they can do after they are rescued. This is another part of the problem of child labour - follow-up solutions. If the government lets them go home and do nothing, it is tantamount to letting them go back and starve to death; Then saving them means nothing to them. They still can't afford tuition and have nowhere to go. Therefore, it is clear that if we really want to save these children, developing follow-up solutions is the first thing we should consider. Only in this way can we save those poor children.
