Given the grievous negative aftereffects of some college male students’ drinking, many researchers and campus teachers attach great concern to this problem. The reason why college men drink and approaches to prevent this phenomenon are of the utmost significance.

According to Perkin drinking is mainly an activity dominated, identified, and centered by male (6-8). Many college men drink to be social and believe that drink with others is just one of the rules of manhood (Kimmel,138). McClelland also suggests that the need for power is the principal manifestation of college men drinking (119). However, Capraro reveals that college men’s drink actually relates to both men’s masculinity of power and powerlessness (307). Men usually are more powerful than women when as a group, but men are not more powerful than meal when both as individuals.  On the other hand, the rules of manhood let male individuals to accept the necessary to be more powerful than females as individuals. Therefore, college men are likely to feel pain and alienation when alone, namely, they would feel powerless.

Here are two examples that how male college students’ drinking are associated with the paradoxical masculinity. For one, males are supposed to be powerful in our society (David, Brannon), and drinking is usually a way that signals the establishment of cooperation and relationship network among individuals, which also symbolizes social status. Therefore, it is understandable that males are supposed to drink even it he is a college student. This is the powerful aspect of masculinity. Nevertheless, since men are supposed to be more powerful, many college men think that only when one is powerful that he can be recognized as a man. When men feel they are powerless, they may eager to obtain social power (McClelland, 119), alcohol is exactly the alternative approach for them to be or feel more “powerful”, because drinking enables them to feel energetic and influential (p84). Under this circumstance, students tend to drink at a higher level in groups. This is a powerlessness cause, where alcohol abuse is attached to inhibition decreasing and power stimulation. Since male’s feeling of powerful and powerless has close relevance to their conception of gender role, the use of alcohol also be considered as a way for college men to accommodate gender-role conflict (Capraro 310).

Considering the second group of examples. On the one hand, college has been a world made by the undergraduates (Hoeowitz 3), while women are usually persuaded not to drink too much, drinking with other classmates or friends are a good way for male to establish friendship with each other. Moreover, even outside universities, males are more often regarded as the core of a group. For instance, when conducting research outside school, males are supposed to drink rather than females for people believe that males are more reliable subconsciously. On the other hand, male’s perception about university life also contributed to their heavy drink. Many students who absorb themselves into alcohol deems college life as an adventure, a chance for adult development or permissiveness(Capraro 310). We cannot deny the fact that many fresh men experience confusion, anxiety, and loss in their first year college life(Gold 7). Hence, due to their complex to be powerful, they are encouraged to drinking, which can help them away from shame and grief. In addition, when people will feel extremely powerlessness and grieving, if they regard college life as chances for permissiveness and do not take their personal responsibility, they are more likely to drink excessively (Copraro 311).

Solutions to college men drinking mostly rely on education and regulation on school basis. Here are three practical intervenes. Rooted in males’ misperception on gender-role, college men alcohol abuse might be effectively prevented by involving gender awareness into the alcohol education and prevention education (Capraro 313). This program is supposed to recruit males only, passing correct perceptions on “healthy masculinity”, and appropriate approaches to establish healthy relationship with other men, women, families, and intimate partners. Moreover, college students should be encouraged to participate in positive activities or organizations, to perform in sports competition or to run for office. These are much more positive approaches for college men to acquire powerful feelings. Meanwhile, it is of significant importance for universities and colleges should to involve alcohol education in these activities, or the result might be counter-productive.  In addition, school can also use campus media to educate its students (Perkin 3). Besides the preventive practices, schools should set punishment, treatment and extra education for those frequent violators (Capraro 313).

There are also many tracks of the paradoxical masculinity in the famous documentary the Hunting Ground. The Hunting Ground is a documentary concerning rapes happened in American Universities. Here are several points that echo Capraro’s article. Firstly, it mentioned that fraternity is the where that most rapes happen. On the one aspect, people in a fraternity is often a place to improve the power of its members as a group, college men can establish solid identity and friendship with other members in the same fraternity. However, this does not improve the power of male members as an individual. Males are eager to avoid shame to prove themselves. Driven by this inflated eager, college men are encouraged to treat women as sexual objects (Capraro 311), which result in the high rate of campus rape. Secondly, take campus athletes for example, they show their powerful masculinity on playground. Despite the energetic and influential images they present in public, they are powerless to deal with intimacy relationship with females. The wrong perception about the male-female relationship in reality, they believe that men should be superior to women, but they might found that they are not so powerful when compared with a female. This is why some male rape females in campus. The college men are powerful with regard to physical power, but are not more powerful mentally than females. So they rape girls and afraid of saying “love”, which is a word that has some connotation about responsibility. Finally, it is evident that college men who engaged in group activities are more likely to rape, they are confident as a group, but not as an individual. One of the reasons that most rapes cannot be solved fairly might because of the reality that authorities are mainly composed of males. This also contributes to more rapes and misconception on male-female relationship among college men.

In conclusion, the reason why college men turn to heavy drink is that they are pursuing what they recognized as “manhood”. However, researches reveal that college men’s alcohol abuse has evident correlation to the paradoxical masculinity. On the one hand, males are supposed to be powerful in social activities and daily life, and the capacity to drink in social circumstances is necessitate for males to show their powerfulness. On the other hand, males actually are not powerful as they thought, especially when as an individual. The gap between the reality and their perception of manhood, man development, and male-female role in society urge them to avoid shame, depression, confusion, and other negative emotions, while alcohol just provide them such an alternative approach to obtain “power”.  Universities that seek solutions to college men drinking should emphasize the importance of preventive education, and encourage students to engage more in sports, student organization, and participate in other positive activities. In which, it is of utmost importance to pass the correct perception of masculinity and gender role to college men as early as possible.
