The sole purpose of capital is to add value and maximize profits

Both the readings and the documentary of the first two weeks point to the negative implications of neoliberalism on democracy and social equality. In the neoliberal state, the sole purpose of capital is to add value and maximize profits, instead of protecting the environment and public welfare. In today's dominance of the capitalism system, capital has penetrated into various fields such as politics, economy, and culture. In the United States, both the government and the people have been abducted by capital through lobbying and commodity culture. Consequently, the foundation of democracy, justice in the tax system, and the well-being of the society are threatened. The hope for changing the situation lies in the younger generations, who are empowered by education to challenge the dominant neoliberalism ideology.

During the growth and expansion of corporates, the inevitable conflict of interest leads the profit-driven corporates to undermine democracy by exerting financial influence on politicians. Such influence is by strengthening the control of the departments that cannot be privatized through lobbying. For example, the taxation legal codes of the United States have been made increasingly complicated and filled with loopholes in recent years. It is through these loopholes that extremely absurd tax dodging activities are legalized and are becoming the norm. What’s worse, while even a student from an elementary school can tell the absurdity of major US corporates not paying taxes at all, there is very little people can do to change the situation immediately. Democracy has been undermined and corrupted by neoliberalism.

Adopting the neoliberalism perspective of the world, money becomes power itself. Money can be the invisible hand behind politics, determining what policy or which candidate is popular among the public. The situation has gone worse with the increasingly higher demand for financial resources in political campaigns. The neoliberal state has been married with the interests of capital. The purpose of the state is to serve capital accumulation and value-added services. On the one hand, the state has established a series of institutions, such as major banks and international financial institutions, to safeguard its political and economic interests. These institutions are completely immune to democratic power. Under such circumstances, it is beyond the ability of any individual to change the situation. Even former POTUS Obama has failed to keep his promise of closing the tax loopholes.

Failure to tax major corporates lead to the decline in the level of social welfare and the widening gap of inequality. Neoliberalism opposes all forms of state intervention in the name of respecting freedom and rights, and advocates reducing deficits and stimulating economic growth by cutting government welfare expenditures. While neoliberalism emphasizes the freedom of choice of capitalists, they deliberately overlook the fact that due to the government's relaxation of the control over capital, they are the only stakeholder empowered in the game. In contrast, the freedom of the working class is reduced. Even the most basic job rights and social welfare are not guaranteed. With rising unemployment rates, the gap between the rich and the poor has been further widened even in a developed country such as the US.

While undermining democracy and equality, neoliberalism constantly empowers major corporates through the spread of commodity culture. The process of neoliberal globalization has consolidated the power of the financial monopoly, but has increasingly marginalized the masses, including the working and middle class. The neoliberal capital accumulation model is a way of transferring wealth from the masses to the rich. The current working class lacks the class consciousness, making it extremely difficult to form a revolutionary situation. As a result, the working class is struggling with the reduction in public welfare and low wages, while the monopoly of major corporates sustains the current situation.

In essence, commodity culture is the means for neoliberalism to remain the dominant social ideology in most parts of the world. The growth of commercial advertising in the 50s was accompanied by a rapid expansion of the supermarket and retail industry. The consumers are positioned in the carefully arranged flow of products and the advertisements are brainwashing them repeatedly to buy things they don’t need. Soon, the supermarket was replaced by large shopping malls. The mode of the supermarket was replicated and expanded to entire buildings of stores filled with desirable products. The feeling of being immersed in the limitless consumer atmosphere is further reinforced by the rise of the Internet and the countless product promotion websites.

Digital media has accelerated the concentration of exhibitions and sales, and has also improved the personalization of consumer experiences. Commodity culture and neoliberalism teaches people that a good life is bought with money and the sole purpose of personal value and hard-working is to consume more. Indeed, no matter how rich a person becomes in the modern society, one thing he or she never needs to worry about is where to spend all the money. While people’s material desires are expanding with no limit, they are driven away from the things that truly matter for their wellbeing: the safety provided by the police force and the fire department, affordable care, and quality education. All of these most important areas are suffering from budget cuts because major corporates gain all the profits yet fail to pay taxes in the US.

While the current dominant ideology of neoliberalism seems to be impossible to change, there are still hopes among the younger generations and the social activists. The most important thing a professor can teach the students is to remain relevant to the society, to be critical and not afraid to challenge the authorities when social problems occur. Since 2010, there have been the demonstrations in Greece, multi-industry strikes in France, the protest against rising tuition fees in the UK, the protest against unemployment in Spain, as well as the Occupy Wall Street movement in the US. These social movements show that a bottom-up revolution in the political and economic systems may be the best hope for restraining the uncontrolled neoliberalism and restoring equality in society.
