Views of Loyalty of Creon and Antigone

When Sophocles created Antigone, Greece was at the peak of democracy and it was a time of freedom. In the play, Creon is a typical tyranny. Antigone is a hero. Creon and Antigone’s behaviors have valid reasons as a result of different understanding of loyalty.

As a king, Creon was loyal to the security of the city, the authority and dignity of political power.Creon wanted to be seen as a reasonable ruler(Bibik, 2009).He must punish the traitors and ensure the uniform implementation of the decree. First of all, Creon’s acquisition of the throne was almost accidental because of the accidental death of Oedipus and his two sons. Thus his power lacks sufficient political legitimacy. Creon himself is fully aware of this, and he must take certain measures to determine or consolidate his power and accumulate his own legitimacy. Not only as a leader of the city-state, he hoped that his decree would be unimpeded and the order would be banned. He must also pass his own political achievements, but Creon faced great challenges. Thebes was experiencing major civil strife and wars at that time. It is very much in need of political stability, city-state harmony, people’s solidarity and political authority. By guaranteeing the security and prosperity of the city-states, the people of the city-states can gain the approval and build their own legitimacy. It was impossible for Creon to treat Eteocles with the body of Polyneices similarly, as the former had sacrificed his life for the country. If the insurgents are not severely punished, they can not deter other possible rebellions in the future in the city-state. It is hard to establish the concept of the supremacy of the city-state? Creon knew that, under the temptation of interest, anyone could emulate Polyneices. Therefore, from the political point of view, from the interests of the city-states and from the effective exercise of the power of Creon himself, it is necessary to punish the traitors. Creon is loyal to the pressure of social change he has been subjected to, and is responsible for the city state and the future, although this responsibility will benefit the legitimacy of his own regime.

In a social and quasi-political structure that has been partly born out of the family, the loyalty to the family, as well as personal honor, is very important to the behavior of Antigone. Sophocles clearly affirmed the rights of Antigone, which was affirmative. This is an important and progressive significance of this drama. Antigone feels that it is obligatory to fulfill the same sacredness of the time. The family ethical responsibility is supported by natural blood relationships. Antigone made this choice in the dilemma between divinity and secularity. Antigone thinks that she is opposed to Creon, not the law, not to mention the city, because Creon does not mean the law, nor does it represent the city state, let alone represent God's will. Antigone challenged Creon's sovereign decree about her brother Polynices(Honig, 2009).There is a strong feeling of Antigone's love for his elder brother and family. Here, it embodies the heroic image of Antigone and highlights her personal independence. At the same time, it also reflects the society's opposition to the dictatorship of the founder and advocates the democratic spirit of the society, because the law is supposed not to be the will of the individual, but the will of the citizen. The natural emotions or family ethics are more valued by her. From an individual experience level, Antigone is merely motivated by its own habits and feelings and is responsible for family and traditions.

There should be a general sense of loyalty to national laws. Antigone is known as a woman with ‘heroic temper’(Shelton, 1984).The readers will understand this feeling of Antigone's love for his elder brother, but will not agree or fully accept her practice. One of the most basic judgments and principles is that, given the circumstances at the time, everyone should be considerable and consider the overall situation. Then it will be considered, in the circumstances, who should make concessions or give way to the interests of all the people in the city-state or community or country. The interests of the city-state, community or country should not be sacrificed to satisfy the individual's natural emotional needs. The civil disorder in Thebes is over. The foreign enemy has been defeated. The city-state has no danger of imminent danger. However, the city-state still needs to distinguish between the enemy and must punish the traitors, and must have strong leaders and strict unimpeded access. The decree maintains stability and guards against the crisis. This is related to the long-term implications of the broader and overall interest of the city states and the community.

Creon was loyal to the security of the city, the authority and dignity of political power, but Antigone is loyal to the family, as well as personal honor.
