A Discussion of Parenting Styles and Its Influence on Children Based on Interview

The family is the cell of society. It is the social unit in which the great majority of the most contacted and always contacted in their own lives. The parental style is the way in which the family is educated and cultivated in order to cultivate the child's physical and mental health. It is one of the important environments for children’s growth, and the parents are the most important ones to support children. There is a strong influence of parenting practices on the emotional and social development of children(Lemos, 2010). Therefore, in the family, parenting styles plays a crucial role in the growth of a child. For this reason, this article is based on an interview with a family located in Beijing, the capital of China. There are four family members : father named Lin Yong and mother named Zhang Hui, and a twin named Lin Yuan and Lin Fang. The parents are both highly educated class who worked in the research institution or college. But the father  Lin Yong was often sent to work in another city in the southern part of China. He looked after Lin Yuan for most of the time and Lin Fang is often taken care by his mother. Those two kids are both 5 years old.


Section I – Summary of the interview

In the interview, both of parents expressed that their expectation of the children is high. Often, Lin Yong puts forward many rules, expecting Lin Yuan to strictly abide by them. Lin Yong seldom explains to children the necessity of obeying these rules. Instead, Lin Yong relies on punitive and obligatory tactics (such as the arbitrariness of rights or the withdrawal of love) to force children to obey. Lin Yong can not sensitively perceive Lin Yuan's different perspectives, but he wants his children to be obedient and respect their authority. This is a very restrictive style of parenting. Also, the father Lin Yong believes that lax discipline will spoil the child. He demanded that the children should behave in a consistent and obedient manner, and cannot stand the children's objections to the rules and orders from him, otherwise he will punish the children or threaten to punish them. The father will use his own standards to request the children, but he does not realize that the demands on the child's personality is a disguised form of stifling; he cannot accept the child's feedback, lacks enthusiasm and care for the child, and demands that the child unconditionally obeys and cannot be negotiated. He rarely encourage and praise children. This parenting style is assessed as the authoritarian parenting style. Lin Yuan, who in general stay with father easily develop confrontational personality traits. In the interview, he lacked the ability to think independently, or indecisively. He was psychologically prone to depression and anxiety, and lack the flexibility to learn, as reported by his father.


The mother said that her expectation of the child is high in the interview, and educates the child with the personal behavior. Also, she is very willing to listen to the child, such as the thoughts and feelings, and usually create a democratic family atmosphere. Mother often value the ability to cultivate children's reasoning and explanations to help him learn the results of expected behavior. There are clear and reasonable requirements that will set certain behavioral goals for Lin Fang, make appropriate restrictions on unreasonable behaviors of him. In daily life, she tends to supervise Lin Fang to strive to achieve the goals. At the same time, she does not lack the warmth the parents should have and can actively take care of children. She expressed that she can listen to the child's statement with patience, and can understand with reason and emotion, and encourage children to grow up. She practices rational, strict, democratic, caring and patient education. Under such teaching, Lin Fang tends to gradually develop good personality qualities such as self-confidence, independence, cooperation, positive optimism, and good socialization. The child's thinking is active, imaginative, with good performance in self-controlling. Also, he is able to listen to opinions, study flexibly, and be good at communicating with classmates. This is a controlled but flexible way of parenting. The parenting style is assessed as authoritative style of parenting. And the difference with the authoritarian father is that she will raise the child to a high standard in a gentle way, and will respect the child's opinion.  Authoritative styles thus embodies two meanings. One is to embody her requirements for children, namely "power". Parents have the obligation to bring up children and they also have the right to educate them. Second, they reflect the child's feedback attitude towards parents. This is the result of the interaction between parents and children.


At last, the parents expressed that fundamentally speaking, they hope to better realize the socialization of children without impairing their curiosity, initiative and personal ability.


Section II – Conclusion

Zhang Hui is considered as the sort of parent using authoritative styles. She is facing children with a good attitude and emotions, as she is good at listening to the children's voices, providing timely feedback on the children's demands, and avoiding becoming autocracy. By contrast, Lin Yong is marked with the use of authoritarian parenting style. There is no definite rule for children's education. However, different parenting styles may leads to different character of children. This requires parents to be more patient and careful in their daily lives, to find out in a timely manner the problems may arise during the child’s growth, to revise their own parenting methods, and to find a suitable way through learning and interaction with their children. Children are constantly evolving. Parents should continue to improve themselves while educating their children. In the face of the child's request, they must adopt a consistent attitude. According to the child's actual situation, it is key to put forward reasonable goals and requirements, and to help children achieve their goals, regardless of failure or success.
