High School Education in the U.S.

There is no doubt that American education is one of the most excellent education systems around the world. Nowadays, more and more Chinese parents send their children to receive advantaged education in the U.S. and they believe that their children will learn better as early as possible. However, every coin has two sides. I spent my senior high school in the U.S and I found that American. secondary education has both benefits and drawbacks. Hereafter, I will briefly describe and analyze the education system and give my own opinions.

American senior high school is divided into 4 grades from 9th to 12th grade. Students have the right to choose attending a public high school or a private school. No matter what kind of high school you stay, you have to finish both required courses and optional courses. Generally, Math, English, Science and History are the main subjects of required course. It seems that American high schools lay more emphasis on history teaching, which consulates students’ feeling of patriotism. All the required courses are divided into several levels. Students could choose to learn in an appropriate level based on their competence. As for optional course, there are a range of subjects and areas that students could choose according to their interests such as Arts, Music, Drama, Psychology, Computing etc. Except for the curriculum stated, extracurricular activity and clubs play significant roles in American high school. There are varies activities after the class, especially sports activity. American people draw more attention on athletic ability than school performance. The campus stars are always the people who are good at playing sports. When it comes to teaching style, American high schools nowadays teach students in a student-centered learning mode. Teachers are no more an authority and leaders in the class. They tend to be an assistant and a facilitator. The teaching mode requires more communication skills for teachers and the ability to form positive relationship with individual students.

As described above, I think that American secondary education system has several advantages as follows: First of all, the courses designed for students are scientific and reasonable. As for required course, students can choose the level that is suitable for their competence, they do not need to waste time to learn the knowledge they have acquired once again. As a result, they would have more time and energy to learn more knowledge in different areas. As for optional course, high schools supply students with diverse opportunities to develop their own interests, which stimulates students’ passion of learning and leads to a better school performance. Secondly, the extracurricular activities are good for students’ physical health as well as an efficient way to release students’ mind, which is significantly beneficial for students’ academic learning. Last but not the least, the teaching style of student-centered learning brings several benefits to students’ development. Firstly, student become more independent and motivated. Secondly, group work is the typical activity in student-centered learning and it inspires teamwork and social skills. Meanwhile, the relationship between teachers and students is getting better and more harmonious.

Although there are several benefits of American Secondary education system, I still believe that some actions should be taken to improve the education system. It is true that American students are more creative and independent than other students from Asian countries. They can always come up with unique perspectives in team work. They also have strong ability to design and carry out an experiment. However, when it comes to an academic examination (such as ACT/SAT), it seems that American students get lower grades than Asian students. It may be because American high schools focus less on improving students’ academic performance. Actually, academic competence should be as important as individual’s physical and creative competences. Consequently, American high schools should invest more energy in designing courses related to ACT/SAT for students to improve their academic performance. In addition, I think some of American students are quite self-centered and always ignore the feeling of their families and friends. Focusing more on developing individual’s personality could be one of the reasons. Students are taught to be more characteristic and open but they are less taught to be more modest and respectful to others. If the issue is getting worse, it will lead to some bed behaviors such as campus bullying and discrimination. As for this issue, I think high schools should offer more courses related to ideology and morality. Organizing more community activities (such as taking care of seniors living alone in the form of team work etc.) is also a good way to improve student’s morality. Finally, we all know that the U.S. is the 4th biggest country around the world, it has 50 states in total. It is reasonable that the development levels are unbalanced among these states. As a result, the funding of education in different states is radically different. There are big gaps of education level between different states. To solve this problem, I think the U.S. government should investigate the education status of each state, then giving enough support (including teaching resources and financial support) to improve the education levels in states to guarantee the whole improvement of American education. Furthermore, some states with advanced education resources could give a hand to the states with poor education resources to improve their teaching standards more quickly and efficiently.

To sum up, American Secondary education has both pros and cons. The free atmosphere of learning and diverse courses designed bring lots of benefits to students’ development. The advanced teaching style (student-centered learning) enhances students’ motivation of learning and improves the relationship between teachers and students. However, improving students’ academic performance and moral behavior as well as balancing states’ education standards are also significant in American education’s career. We all hope that American high school education would change better and go well in the future.
