A Discussion of Form and Meaning Based on “Diving into the Wreck” and “Lady Lazarus”

At the end of the 1960s, the women's liberation movement began, and feminist criticism began to focus on the study of male culture and opened up the feminine aesthetics that celebrate women. In this essay, it discusses how form and meaning interact with each other based on “Diving into the Wreck”by Adrienne Rich and “Lady Lazarus” by Sylvia Plath.

The "I" in poetry of Sylvia Plath is a female victim in a fascist concentration camp. “Lady Lazarus” is a masterpiece of Plath, and the poet imagined a woman. In fact, her prototype was a character named Lazarus in the Bible. According to the Bible, Lazarus was resurrected after her death, and told why she wanted to end her life. The brutal fascists symbolize the authority and violence of the patriarchal society, and the doctor is its representative. This poem reflects the damage of the patriarchal system to women's body and mind through how the girl tells her how her body in the concentration camp was brutally dismembered. In this poem, the image of a woman is like a patriarchal experiment, a reform, and a victim. Just as the Jewish girl's body was shredded by the Nazis and made into various crafts: “Them unwrap me hand and foot——The big strip tease. Gentlemen, ladies”. In the poem, a Jewish girl has tragically encountered the destruction of the female subject and self-consciousness in the patriarchal society. The various parts of the body of the Jewish girl were depicted as various items. “Flesh, bone, there is nothing there——A cake of soap, A wedding ring, A gold filling”. The poet strongly condemned the feminization of the feminist society. In the patriarchal society, women are not a person with a complete personality and ego, but are transformed and utilized by men's desire.

In “Diving into the Wreck”, Rich integrated her own experiences and reflections on women's personal lives, and she also devoted her thoughts to politics and history. In the 1970s, Rich emerged from the struggles of marriage and family and was trapped in the whirlpool of the feminist movement and the Vietnam War in the poem collection. The poem describes the passage of “I” from a sun-drenched sailing boat to a sunken ship in a diving suit. The poem uses a seemingly singular linear narrative technique, but it creates a mysterious atmosphere. There is  a description of the sea in the poem. Here, the sea is characterized by unknown world. At the same time, mystery is like a dim and weightless world, because “the sea is not a question of power”. The sea seems to be the loneliness of “I,” but it is actually about the wreck isolated from the world. “I” watch the shipwreck. In return, the shipwreck is watching me. This kind of watching is a kind of mutual reference. This poem reveals the poet's dissatisfaction with the male-dominated and old social order. It also shows that the poets who are women are chasing the dream of the main being. The poet's anger and seeking her identity are clearly shown.

Both poems show how "I," who represents the poet experienced painful struggle, and recovered the lost female self-consciousness. The two female poets both expressed that the female subject and self-consciousness were brutally shredded. The choice of death is an important theme of Plath's poetry. Just as a poet commits suicide, it does not mean that the poet is compromised, but is a complete resistance to the patriarchal society and a victory in its realization. Death in Plath's poems means revenge and victory. Just as demonstrated in the works of many women writers, only the extreme way of choosing death can completely subvert and negate the tradition of patriarchal society and effectively challenge the authority of the patriarchal society. Then Ritch's emphasis on the female subject and its existence in the poem is precisely an artistic approach that urges women to face up to themselves. ““Diving into the Wreck” is a poem that casts the existence of the subject as a “wreck ship” and constructs a dream about the self. Dream poetry and adventure-like narrative together constitutes women’s search for and surpassing self-existence.

Although Adrienne Rich and Sylvia Plath lived in a male-dominated society, they have armed themselves with the rationality promoted by the society, written their own experiences and comprehends, and launched a search for the self-identity of female self with the use of a series of forms in the poetry successfully.
