A Discussion of Motivation of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is one of the most common forms of academic dishonesty. Although a lot of schools make rules to eradicate it, the phenomenon of plagiarism has not been reduced and finally eliminated. To fully address the issue of plagiarism, it needs to take into account the psychological factors or motivation behind the plagiarism, which works in the entire process of plagiarism. Therefore, this essay discusses the psychological motivation for plagiarism:seeking of profit and return in a quick manner, the speculative psychology  and social needs of students to make continued academic achievement.

 

The seeking of profit and return in a quick manner is one of the motivations for plagiarism. First, there is no shortage of plagiarism for monetary returnsThere are examples of plagiarism among some teachers, students, and some researchers in various scientific research institutes with different aims, but they are ultimately driven by the seeking of profits. Two books of Kaavya Viswanathan who was accused of plagiarism are highly valued with a $500,000 contract with publisher Little, Brown, Co(Plagiarism in Literature). For example the direct purpose of Viswanathan’s plagiarism is to publish a book and share it with the readers, which does not seem to be directly linked to economic interests. In fact, once it is published and got a corresponding popularity, it can stand for value in the market, resulting in higher wages or positions, in the final analysis, or their own interests. A lot of students who studied in various institutions also have been reported to conduct plagiarism(“70% of College Students CHEAT!!! It's still WRONG, folks”, 2011). The direct purpose of student plagiarism is to graduate normally and obtain a degree, which does not seem to be directly linked to economic interests. In actual fact, once a student graduates and got a corresponding degree, it can means a lot in the talent market, resulting in higher wages or positions. In order to achieve this goal, some chose to cheat, make false reports of their achievements, and conduct plagiarism. Therefore, this can be called an imbalance between needs and abilities, that is, the imbalance between the desire for easy achievement and the limited ability, which is the source of plagiarism. From the many cases of plagiarism, most plagiarists have the psychological tendency of quick success.

 

In addition, the speculative psychology also motivates some people to copy others' works or writings. There is the legal consequence if there is a violation of the copyright of others. Once this act is exposed, plagiarists not only lose their reputation, but also bear the cessation of other civil liability of infringement. They also have to make compensation for damages. More serious incidents and repeat behavior of copying will lead to a punishment on campus(“Plagiarism in Academics”, 2018). However, there are people who are willing to copy at these high costs. In addition to the above mentioned pursuit of quick success at work, there is a psychological factor at work, speculation. Because these plagiarism will be revealed sooner or later and released to the public, it can only be said to be a speculative success. However, there is an impact of system of accusations of plagiarism on this speculative success is great, which reinforces plagiarism motivation. There is an inconsistency in terms of the dealing of plagiarisms(IPBIZ, 2008). Thus plagiarism occurs frequently, and the grade is escalating. In addition, this provides motivation for those who want to plagiarize and are afraid to be punished. It is further turning their potential criminal motive into a criminal offense, which is why there is a large number of plagiarism. To penalize the action is not enough, although the punishment of plagiarism in colleges in Europe and the United States is very harsh, such as the cancellation of degree. 

 

The strong social needs of students to make continued academic achievement also motivates plagiarism of some people. The motivation of plagiarism is also based on the needs of social interaction, such as self-esteem, friendship, sense of accomplishment and so on. One case of academic dishonesty is the sharing of answers of take-home assignments(Plagiarism in Academics, 2018). People who shared their homework tend to have a strong sense of self-esteem and accomplishment. It can not be wrong to have such a social need, and if done properly, it can be the motivation for progress. If handled improperly, its self-esteem, sense of accomplishment will have an abnormal development. Driven by of self-esteem and sense of accomplishment, the sharing of intellectual work of others is carried out in order to win other students’ respect or friendship. In the environment of students’ rank and GPA in a class related to academic performance, if there is no academic performance, it means that the stance will be challenged by peers in the competition. In fact, it is hard for any competent person to guarantee the academic achievements will always grow. If the progress is not hard to be won step by step, it will inevitably lead to the creation of improper means. Plagiarism is an intellectual theft which uses the intellectual works of others without attribution(“Plagiarism in Academics”, 2018). The plagiarism of works with good quality will lead to better results and less efforts made on one academic study, so it is a great attraction for students with strong desire for the maintenance of better GPA.

 

The essay shows that the motivation driven by profit and return, the speculative psychology of being successful and the social needs related to good academic performance are the main reasons for plagiarism and its spread. Because people's psychological problems are complex and changeable, the complexity of the plagiarism problem is increased, especially for those who are highly educated.The clarity of these issues will allow people to further understand the nature of plagiarism and provide a new path of thinking for deterring plagiarism.
