Bach's Later Work Goldberg Variation

2021-05-20 来源: 51Due教员组 类别: Essay范文

Baroque period was from 1600 to 1750. And the overall social circumstance in this period was volatile, especially in the first half of the 17th century. The struggle of various religious parties (mainly Christianity and Catholic), the expansion of rulers, the opposition of various classes were intermingled together. In the middle of the Baroque, the society began to be relatively stable. The bourgeoisie held various parties in order to gather talents, elites, and hired musicians to create and perform for various activities. This is generally defined in the history of Western music in the Baroque period. It was from 1690 and 1750. The music trend of this period has shifted from Italy to northern Europe. The monarchs of European countries paid more attention to music. The development space for musicians was very large. Bach, Handel, Kuplan, Vivaldi, D. Scalati and other musician masters caused a far-reaching influence on the music of later generations. Certainly, the biggest influencer may be. Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach's music works on the one hand reflected the social life of Germany at that time, on the other hand also reflected the fusion of Western European national music. He developed polyphonic music into its highest peak, and made his melody close to the homophonic music.(Rose S, 1983) Bach hacreated a large number of works in his life and achieved extremely high artistic value, which laid the foundation for the development of Western music in the future. Unfortunately, Bach ’s status in the world was not high, nor was it understood, and the published works were few, or even gradually forgotten by people of his era. It was not until the 19th century that it was excavated and revived by musicians such as Mendelssohn, and people began to re-recognize this rare musical genius.

(1) Creative motivation of the work

The creation time of Goldberg Variation was between 1741 and 1742. During the Leipzig period, the work was originally called Aria mit verschiedenen Veranderungen and was the fourth part of Keyboard Etude at the same time. Besides, it was published in 1742.

In fact, the music should be called "Catherine Variations", because Bach was composed for Earl Catherine. Earl Catherine was a diplomat from the ancient Courland noble family and had a high cultural quality. Earl's love for music reached a level of enthusiasm, because his son went to school in Leipzig, visited Leipzig many times, and visited Bach many times. On a trip, the Earl met John Goldberg, a very talented young man. Earl Catherine then sent Goldberg to receive music education and hired him as the Earl ’s family pianist. The Earl hoped to customize a serenade at Bach and let Goldberg play for himself because he suffered from severe insomnia. Ordinary composers will definitely wrote a dull sleep-friendly tune, and Bach only embodied this in the theme of arias, and turned it into 30 variations. Earl Catherine was very happy to get such a work, and Bach received a silver cup filled with 100 gold coins. Bach and Earl Catherine are very harmonious. The melody set at the end of the whole song is the best proof. Bach did not end with a fugue according to convention. He cited the tunes of two folk songs to show the friendship between him and the Earl. In fact, for the music work itself, the title and background are not the most important, the meaning of the work itself is the key.

(2) Historical status of the work

Variation musical works written on familiar tunes or based on the theme created for certain purpose have been very popular with composers since the 16th century. Variations at that time mainly have features as follows. First, most of them were based on a relatively fixed melody and also based on a relatively fixed harmonic progression, short and fixed bass lines. Since the prevalence of using bass as its unique and important composition method in the Baroque period, the bass parts were independent and valued by musicians, so there were many uses based on fixed bass lines for variations. (Colin B,2014)

The music of the Baroque period was gorgeous and complicated, and the system of major and minor adjustments and harmonies became more and more complete. The trend of humanism was still developing, and various art forms were looking for new development paths, such as the impromptu and changeable music, magnificent and magnificent buildings, all reflecting people's thinking and emotions.

Bach, a devout Protestant believer, was deeply affected by these reforms and changed his religious music in a way that made it innovative and secular. On the basis of absorbing these creative techniques, Bach raised the level of variation to a new level. Goldberg Variation could be said to have created a new era for later variations. The ingenious conception of the work had directly affected the development of variations in the history of Western music. We can clearly see the influence of Goldberg Variation on two famous variations, Beethoven's Diabelli Variations and Brahms' Handel Theme Variations, such as the conversion of major and minor scale, alternated use of free variation and strict variation, the adjustment of genre, length, etc. Later musician also called these three variations as the world's three major variations.

In Baroque keyboard music, variations based on the melody line of the bass parts were very popular in the music form. Throughout the history of Western music, with a simple bass line as the theme to create such a large and complex work, Goldberg Variation should be a very outstanding representative. Secondly, Goldberg Variation incorporatea large number of musical elements with different musical styles and different themes, which was a concentrated expression of the secularity in Bach music. Compared with other works of Bach, this variation did not have a very strong religious color, and was closer to the citizens' life. The whole piece of Goldberg Variation summarizethe composition rules of the Baroque period. The powerful logic and symmetry in the works reflected Bach ’s interdisciplinary ability to integrate mathematics into music. This multidisciplinary combination created dramatic changes on the subsequent composers. Therefore, the creation of this genre haa very profound impact to music world.

(3) The discussion of different versions of recordings

The analysis of the performance version is to combine the interpretations of different pianists, so as to experience the work more deeply. In many performance versions, I mainly listened the performances of Glenn Gould, Rosaline Turek and Zhu Xiaomei.

Gould's interpretation of Goldberg Variation is arguably the most authoritative performance of the work and the most widely listened audio version. Gould's performance can be described as "variable" or even "fancy", even his sitting posture is different from others. Gould's performance of the same work is different every time, and he will incorporate his own ideas from different periods. This is exactly the same as Bach's new concept when he created Goldberg Variation. However, Gould believes that the performance of the work is a secondary creation that incorporates his emotions on the basis of understanding the style, structure, and background of the work, rather than imitating the era we have never lived in.(Martens, Peter A, 2007) I agree with him very much for the slower speed of Gould makes the version more rigorous, clear, and soft, and the expression of emotions is much deeper.

Rosalyn Turek is recognized as an outstanding researcher and performer of Bach's works in the 20th century. Her musical interpretation and theoretical achievements provide a favorable reference and basis for future generations to study Bach keyboard works. She believes that the most important thing is to understand the original expression of the music itself, which is to say to let the music itself to decide how to play. Turek's requirements on the change of strength are very accurate. No matter how fast the speed is and how complicated the tune is, you can clearly hear the strength and weakness of her music. In terms of speed, Turrek's performance is slower overall, and even the ornament sounds do not sound like ornament sounds. I think her music has added many emotions than the original one and changes some features to some extent.

Due to the title of the first person of Goldberg Variation in China, Zhu Xiaomei has become well known in China. Among the "Top Ten Pianists in China" selected by music critic, Zhu Xiaomei ranked third; many domestic magazines have also begun to recommend Zhu Xiaomei and her Bach music. Zhu Xiaomei has her own unique understanding of Bach's music. She believes that Bach's polyphony music is a life concept that should listen to everyone's voice. Zhu Xiaomei's cohesive treatment after her poetic and aria is rare. The reduced volume and light performance still have a strange contrast effect and a rich sense of layers. This makes her music like water, full of vitality and the power of piercing my soul.

I think all the three versions have their unique perspectives and fully express composers’  distinguished musical insights.
