Using Mobile Phones May Kill While Driving

Essay #2: Using Mobile Phones May Kill While Driving

According to the estimates of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 2.2% of drivers in the United States use handheld electronic devices while driving in 2015 (NHTSA). Whether it is a legal constraint or a significant increase in the number of traffic accidents, it is obviously unable to stop people from looking at their mobile phones while driving. Indeed, taking a sneak peek at your smart phone seems an innocent action, and people may not take the issue of distracted driving seriously. For a long time, people used cars as a symbol of modern society, and now more people consider smart phones as a new symbol of modern society. And when the mobile phone and the car are combined together, the result can be disastrous. Every driver in the United States should be extremely cautious not to use their mobile phones while driving, because doing so would distract the drivers from the road, cause traffic problems, and lead to tragic consequences.

First, using a mobile phone while driving will distract the drivers from the road. Using a mobile phone will inevitably create more information for the driver to process besides the road conditions. Test results published by the UK Transport Research Laboratory show that when using a mobile phone while driving, “sending a text message delays reaction times by 37 per cent. using cannabis slows it by 21 per cent, and drinking to the legal limit by 13 per cent” (Spencer). Because drivers are focusing partly on their mobile phones, it is difficult to think about whether to slow down, whether to observe nearby vehicles at intersections, or whether to turn on the tail lights when turning. Meanwhile, the driver's emotions are also susceptible to the information they receive from the mobile phones, which causes certain fluctuations in their emotions.

As a result of the distraction, using mobile phones reduces the ability of the driver to control their cars. Using a mobile phone while driving will cause a one-handed driving situation. There are still security risks when using headphones or a car phone, because these devices free the hands, but not the mind, and the call will still be distracting. After analyzing data from two consecutive months of car accidents and 60 drivers with 750,000 km of driving data, researchers of the Shanghai Natural Driving Research Project found that “the use of mobile phones mainly impacts the intensity of the driver control activity, the sensitivity of control operation and the stability of vehicle control state” (Zhang, et al. 1464). The seemingly “innocent” actions of using a mobile phone, or even looking at it, would cause major distractions for driving.

Second, using a mobile phone while driving will cause traffic problems. Using a mobile phone while driving leads to more breaches in traffic rules. It reduces the frequency of the driver to look at the rearview mirror and increases the number of sudden braking. It is difficult to make better decisions and take correct avoidance measures within the effective time when other vehicles change lanes, the road ahead narrows, the vehicle merges into the traffic, or pedestrians suddenly appear on the roadside (CARRS). Using a mobile phone while driving prevents the driver from analyzing live traffic conditions in a timely manner. As a result, when there appear sudden and unexpected changes in the traffic conditions, the driver is prone to dangerous actions such as sudden braking, illegal lane change, illegal parking, reverse parking, and U-turn on the main line, which becomes a major safety hazard.

Even without breaching traffic rules, using a mobile phone while driving easily causes traffic jams. When using a mobile phone while driving, most drivers will impair “the speed selection, acceleration, deceleration and headway distance”, reduce the use of traffic signs, increase the number of “abrupt or aggressive braking”, and forget to give way to pedestrians in accordance with regulations (CARRS). As a result, distracted drivers pay less attention to giving way to other drivers when they are supposed to. When everyone else is focusing on the road and observing the traffic rules, this is disrupting the driving order, and the entire flow of traffic is disrupted. In the case of rush hours, paying attention to mobile phones is more likely to cause congestions. This will not only affect the drivers themselves, but also other drivers on the road, which is selfish and irresponsible.

Third, there are countless tragic accidents caused by using mobile phone while driving, and the numbers are rising. On March 18, 2010, the 14-month-old boy Grayson Jett was properly strapped in the back of his father’s car when they were driving out like a usual day. At the same time behind the father and the son, Jessica Howe was driving when she decided to reach for her dropped mobile phone. She tried one time and failed and decided to try another time, and this was one of the worst decisions Howe has made in her life. While reaching for her phone Howe lost control over her car and crashed into Jett’s car, causing a chain reaching that killed Grayson Jett. After being sentenced four years in prison, Howe said to the family of Grayson Jett, "I can't bring him back. I would do anything to bring him back," she said. "I'll never forget it. I'm so sorry" (Chanen). Howe believed it was okay to be distracted for just one second while driving, and an innocent life was taken because of her.

Using a mobile phone while driving will lead to tragic consequences similar to Howe’s. A World Health Organization survey indicates that by 2030, road traffic injuries will rise to the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Meanwhile, among the high-income countries Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Sweden, and United States of America, the US reports the highest fatality rate in traffic accidents, which is around 15% (WHO). The danger factor of driving a mobile phone is becoming much greater than that of drinking and driving. “A person using a hand-held or handsfree mobile phone while driving is four times more likely to have a serious crash resulting in hospital attendance” (CARRS), causing devastations to the family and the loved ones. It is worth noting that fewer and fewer people nowadays would boldly drive after taking drugs or drinking alcohol because it is against the law. However, the same cannot be said for using mobile phones.

In conclusion, every driver in the United States should be extremely cautious not to use their mobile phones while driving. Using mobile phones, with or without the hands, is a major distraction that reduces the driver’s ability to follow traffic rules and look at traffic conditions. As a result, more traffic problems will be caused, and other people will suffer. In addition to minor traffic problems, using mobile phones will also lead to tragic accidents such as the case of Howe, leading to the loss of innocent life within seconds. In the future, the government and the media in the United States should work together in raising the awareness of not using mobile phones while driving.
