American society needs to get rid of stress

In the article The Rights to Fail, by William Zinsser, the author believes that people should get rid of the utilitarianism when they talk about success and failure. In the modern American society, getting ahead from the young age and achievement material successes in early phases of life have become the fascination for the majority. Happiness is being considered as the equivalent of achievement. Such a way of thinking has created tremendous amounts of pressure on the younger generation. The celebration of the young achievers of success would only put more pressure on their shoulders. If one succeeds, the other people expect him to step up in every further step, which end up paralyzing many young people due to pressure.

In compassion, failure is much more needed for the young generation, as they take side trips and poke at different directions to find the right path. People, especially the young, shouldn’t be afraid of failure, instead, they should be encouraged when they fail. Because it is the experiences of failure that make us who we are. Through failure, people become strong and know themselves much better. Therefore, failure isn’t the end of the world, but simply the only way for a man to grow. Success, on the other hand, contains the element of danger. A person who succeeds all the time will have the false impression that he has answers to all problems. Once he realizes that he doesn’t, the failure would be much more devastating and destructive than normal. Through failure, people learn over ten times as much as through success.

The author concludes that the American society needs to be released from the pressure of attaining certain goals at certain ages, to encourage more men of their own wills, since mavericks, dissenters and dreamers are needed more than ever. The changes in the mindset of the younger generation are observed by the author as a positive sign: more than 3 million young Americans are willing to serve VISTA if given the opportunity, which is hardly leading to any material success. But the reason why these youngsters would volunteer for VISTA is due to the motivation of a more enriched life experience that won’t be provided in school. They are putting more value on the “inner” success, rather than what the society decides for them in a rigid way. There are no obligations to “succeed” for an individual, which enables him or her to take risks in life, since it is the right of every person to succeed in their own ways and fail as much as necessary.

Although the stories of the dreamers, mavericks, dissenters are inspiring, it should be noted that the two systems: one for the common and the other for the individuals, are equally important and should coexist. The world is as it is because there are both dreamers and doers among us. Some people are more on the dreamer’s side, not bounded by the rules and systems of the society. The famous painters, artists and inventors are among them. On the other hand, there are also doers, who are driven by the fulfillment of their successes. They do better than most of the others within the system by a deeper understanding of the rules of society. The latter shouldn’t be criticized for their motivations, since as Zinsser argues, different people should have the right to different interpretations of success.

Most people possess a mixture of the two characteristics, but more on the doers’ side. All of us used to be big dreamers when we were young. And some still dream about the things that the existing system would allow us to do. For example, is quitting school for a volunteering experience justifiable? Hardly according to the standards of doers, but most people dream of doing something else anyway. However, they are limited by the terms of the system and have to compromise due to survival needs, since most of the resources in the society goes to the system. While the geniuses and the extremely intelligent go for the individual system that suit them better, it would be even better for the development of the society if the educational system is adjusted to take into account both characteristics of the dreamers and the doers. The existing system, which was inherited for generations, was only created at a time when the most basic needs of education would not be guaranteed. It is therefore necessary for it to go through reforms so that an even mixture of the visions and practices are encouraged.

Such a change may be considered radical, or unrealistic for many, since there are no such precedence of it in any educational system around the world. Even if there was such a workable plan, the resources needed would put a huge burden on the financial system. However, it is not necessarily the case. The reason why the famous dropouts achieved success is not because the action of their dropping out of school, but the fact that they had already been exposed to problems from the reality at a very young age. the existing educational system, however, it isolating the students from reality. It is true even for many courses of the universities. Companies have to invest resources from intern training because many of the fresh graduates have no idea how to solve problems in the real world. It would be difficult for the students to be able to dream within such a system, leaving them no option to do whatever required to get the degree and perhaps a good yet unfulfilling job. Thus, education should be adjusted so that over-simplification of reality is replaced by more exposure to real, relevant problems. This way, the idea of social university is applied, encouraging, or inspiring a more proper and much needed balance of the dreamer and the doer qualities in the students.
