Some people think that college education only measures students by their academic grade and never care about what skills are really useful for their career. However, from my perspective, college is not vocational school, which only gives students practical skills for their job. College is important because it can help students form good habits and develop characters, which is essential during their whole life. Career can’t take up one’s whole life. After eight hours’ working, people still got sixteen hours in one day. They need to communicate with others people and gathering with their family members. Their topics cover a large range, from favorite sports to current events. We all came across someone who always like to argue with people loudly, trying to prove that his favorite sports star is better than anyone else’s and whoever disagrees with him is regarded as an enemy, or someone who only know gossips while they don’t care a bit about things which may change the whole international situation. Maybe they are great technical workers with great manipulative abilities, but who would like to be their friends? College provides a perfect platform for students to build up their habits and characters. Take the assignments for example. During college students go through a lot of group works. They learn to cooperate, learn to manage and also learn to obey. They know how to express their own idea properly. They are more inclusive and more respectful. Maybe the assignment itself has nothing to do with their future career, but they learn how to solve a problem without fighting, how to allocate tasks fairly and how to get along with each other. They form good habits and characters in college, which makes them move more smooth in society.

As the saying goes, the leopard cannot change its spots. A person may never change his personalities. People realize their personalities and try to find out their suitable career directions in college. College is, for many people, the last place where they can make mistakes without the possibility of ruining the whole life. There are lots of choices to make and lots of opportunities to catch. Once they step on society, their life is settled to some degree. They have to find a job and make a living for themselves. People who never had a chance to go to college may find a job and do it for life without even figuring out if it is suitable for his personality. College provides people a place to find what they really love and the possibility to broaden their professional direction. Take the author’s mother for example. Does she really love the job as a waitress? Or she has to do it because she is not qualified for any career else? I can’t deny that she made great performance as a waitress. But except for a waitress, would she also be great as a cashier or a receptionist? Had she went to college, she may have found herself more good at math and would be more willing to work as an accountant. Some students in college find out that they don’t actually like their major and change to another one. That’s a sign that they start to screen out what professional direction would be suitable for their personality. Do they have enough patience to be a teacher? Or are they careful enough to be an engineer? What should they do if they really want to be a doctor but lack courage? Possibilities of dreams is always to best driven force. Finding a career that is suitable for people’s personality would make their attitudes more positive and improve their efficient.

Still, people doubt that if it really worth to take courses in college that may not even come into use in the future. Many students have to apply Student Debt if they want to go to college. They even further doubt that if college is designed to contribute to society or is just a commercial organization to squeeze money. For many young adults, Apple is indispensable in their life. Steve Jobs may be the one they most admire. He dropped out of Reed College in his first year in college, which becomes a main excuse for many young adults that college education is not important at all. However, although Jobs dropped out of school he still took optional courses for eighteen months. During this period, he learned artistic calligraphy, which became the source of the fronts of Macintosh. You never know what course would come into use in your future that can change the whole world and make a great reward for your today’s hardworking. Moreover, as Robin Wilson indicates in his article A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not Likely, the problem among students who go heavily into debt is that they are determined to attend their dream college, no matter the cost. The total cost averages $18,326 a year — and financial aid brings that figure down for many students, but some students borrow more than $40,000 for a bachelor's degree. They just don’t have the consciousness of saving money and enjoys the feeling of economic freedom. That is not a side effect of college itself. It comes from the general mood of society.

If my friend calls me again, I would tell him what the meaning of college education is. Maybe you just want to be a great electronic engineer as career, but you also need to have friends and family. Maybe a great electronic engineer can accurately tell people how the machine works and what the accessory is in technical terms, but that’s not what his friends or family want.
