The Kite Runner is a famous novel written by Khaled Hosseini which is based on the author’s experience with his family in Afghanistan. Narrated in a first-person perspective, it telles a story of two Afghan teenagers, Amir and Hassan about friendship, betrayal and redemption. The novel not only expresses the complaints about the war, but also has a profound reflection on the ethnic and religious issues in Afghanistan. The plot mainly revolves round how and why the hero, Amir, tries to rescue Hassan’s son out of Kabul because Amir feels guilty and wants to pursue his self-salvation for not coming to aid Hassan. The title “Kite Runner” may refers to Hassan because he is a successful one in terms of running kites who knows where the kites land without watching.

The first theme is about guilt and redemption which as a main clue permeates through the novel. After Amir has escaped from the scene of the rape, he has been entangled in the shadow of self-blame. In the face of the mistakes that have been made, the embarrassment and torture of the mind have made Amir spare no effort to atone for his crime, that is, returning to the country to rescue Hassan’s son.

The second theme is about ethnic and religious issues in Afghanistan. Although the book describes that the Talibans have shot Hassan and his wife on the street because of racial discrimination, it has made Afghanistan a real place in the readers’ minds because Amir and Hassan are close friends in spite of different races and religions. It gives the readers a deeper understanding of Afghanistan which is no longer just a tragic place that has been fighting for years.

The first character is Amir who has a complicated personality. Amir is too timid to help Hassan. Amir felt superior to Hassan in terms of hierarchy and race which become the excuse of self-forgiveness after he has teased Hassan. But in the end, through rescuing Hassan’s son makes Amir turn from a selfish and weak child to a man who is upright and brave.

The second character is Hassan who has a perfect personality, that is, pure and loyal, kindness and integrity. He only cares for Amir. Hassan regards Amir as the most important person in his life and willingly does anything for Amir.
