Macroeconomics analysis

Ever since March, the US has been rumoring that it will start a trade war against China. Although in May, both countries released the joint statement that they will not launch a trade war, in July, both countries increased the tariff on many products imported and exported to the other country. Specifically, the US imposed 25% tariffs on $34 billion products imported from China and the latter responded with a similar amount of tariff (Wang, Cheng, 2018). In mid-August, the US imposed another $16 billion of tariff on imported Chinese goods and China retaliated with a proportional amount (Elis, Lawder, 2018). Although the exact amount of trade tariff is not as crucial for analyzing Blackmores’ entrance into the Chinese market, one thing is for sure. If the Chinese found products imported products from the US to be expensive, then there must be a substitute for these US products and Australian products are good substitutes. If similar products can be imported without a heavy tariff, then the Chinese will of course choose to import from other countries such as Australia. This gives Blackmores an advantage from the macroeconomics points of view.

The existing Chinese health and wellness product market analysis

The market showed a steady and continuous growth trend in the past 10 years. With this large market size, Blackmore can expect that there is demand for the product in China. The following is a graph of the Chinese health and wellness product market size in billions RMB.

Apart from the huge market potential, there are also many players in the market without a single firm as the apparent market leader. The following pie chart showed that 75% of the market is taken by other smaller firms and the even the largest player in the industry only takes about 5% market size.

Chinese consumer’s analysis

One phenomenon about the Chinese is that they typically believe that imported products are often better than domestically-made products. Although this might not be true scientifically, it has proven to be true psychologically. A study conducted by Roland Berger showed the Chinese consumer’s attitude towards the effectiveness of health and wellness products from different origins.

From this this graph, we can see that there is growth potential for Blackmores from the perspective of consumer’s preference.

In conclusion, the recent market environment in China is beneficial for Blackmores to enter the Chinese market. First, due to the possible trade war between China and the U.S., Chinese consumers prefer cheaper substitutes from other countries rather than imported goods from US.  Second, there is still large demand for health and wellness products in the Chinese market. Lastly, Chinese consumers tend to choose imported products over domestic products in terms of health and wellness products.
