Three years later, undercover Wu learned about Wang Jiazhi and instructed them to continue the plan of assassinating Mr. Yi. Wang Jiazhi experienced a fierce clash of nationalism and personal passion in front Mr. Yi with the fake identity of "Mrs. Mai". Just when the assassination of traitor Mr. Yi was about to succeed, Wang Jiazhi fell in love, allowing Mr. Yi to escape. In contrast, Wang Jiazhi and several of her classmates were executed together by Mr. Yi later. As the essential element of any good story, conflict has played the major role in Lust, Caution as well. The complexity of history, nationalism and human nature has been pushed to great heights in the film, making it one of the most remarkable masterpieces of Ang Lee.

The transformation process of Wang Jiazhi fully reflects the complexity of human nature. Humanity itself has both good and evil aspects. Wang Jiazhi, the heroine in the film, shows the good side and exposes the evil side of human nature at the same time. As a young woman, falling in love with Mr. Yi is indeed an understandable behavior. However, as a patriotic youth, Wang Jiazhi let Yi go for personal desires and emotions, resulting in the deaths several patriotic youths, including herself. The irreconcilable contradictions and conflicts in Wang Jiazhi, between good and evil, between lust and caution, created a tragedy that is breathtaking. When it comes to the origin of the character of Wang Jiazhi, some consider Eileen Chang herself to be the source, and the story of Wang as a fictional autobiography. Another figure that people regard as the prototype of Wang Jiazhi is Zheng Pingru. Born in 1918, Zheng Pingru was a member of the Central Intelligence Agency. On December 21, 1939, Zheng Pingru lured Ding Mocun, a government official and a traitor, with the excuse to buy a coat (Thompson, 2016). As Ding noticed something wrong, he immediately bolted out of the door into his car and drove off the scene. This failed assassination news soon spread all over Shanghai, making quite a social fuss. In February 1940, Zheng Pingru was executed in secret, at the age of 22 only. Judging from the content of the novel The Spyring, the plot of the Zheng Pingru assassination story was indeed borrowed. The film Lust, Caution extends the structure of novel, and the characters in the film are basically within the framework of the novel. The film only adds Wang Jiazhi's family background. Takes advantage of the audio-visual art form, the image of Wang Jiazhi is even more vivid than the original, highlighting on the human nature. In order to defend national justice, Wang Jiazhi was determined to sacrifice her own personal desires. Luring her prey, Mr. Yi, into an ambushed jewelry shop, she would accomplish her own national justice.

However, in the jewelry store, things turned around completely. Looking at Mr. Yi and the big diamond ring he bought for her, listening to the love confessions from Mr. Yi, Wang Jiazhi's psychological balance began to swing. Wang Jiazhi was originally a patriotic, passionate female college student, sacrificing her own body in order to assassinate Mr. Yi. It would be very hard to convince the audience, without adequate exploration of her character.

Wang Jiazhi and Mr. Yi's first sexual encounter can only be called intercourse. Wang Jiazhi was only Yi’s object of lust and the organization's lure bait. Without preparation, they staged an almost violent and abusive sexual scene directly. It seemed impossible for the audience to perceive the emotional state of Wang Jiazhi from the scene. Again, genuine human emotions overcame the political conflicts, contributing to the final tragic.

With the many backgrounds and specific scenes paving the way, what happened in the jewelry store is only natural to the audience. Wang Jiazhi was looking forward to trying on the big diamond ring, not because of the ring itself, but because of what it symbolized: that someone like Mr. Yi truly cared about her. When she heard Mr. Yi say, "I am not interested in the diamond, I just want to see it worn on your finger," the film completed the transformation of Wang Jiazhi from the hunter of justice to the prey of love. At the moment, a patriotic youth ready to assassinate traitors was gone completely, replaced by a woman captured by Yi's love. At this moment, Wang Jiazhi's consciousness of super-self completely collapsed, and she entered the state dominated by natural instincts and personal emotions. This well staged human nature conflict pushed entire film to its climax.
