How do most people define success? Going to college and getting a college degree seems to be a typical answer. However, that answer could be wrong. Some people argue that a college degree is beneficial, but not necessary. Now, obviously many successful people in the world haven’t college degrees, such as the huge success of moguls like Mark Zuckerberg, who created Facebook, and Steve Jobs, who was the CEO of Apple Inc. What’s more Bill Gates, who is the on-again-off-again richest man in America, with billions of dollars and no college degree? In my opinion, it’s possible to be hugely successful without a college degree because getting a college degree wastes a lot of time, costs a significant amount of money, lacks opportunities for the accumulation of personal experience, despite the opposition that going to college broadens ones’ horizon and make more friends, and persistence is more important for success than a college degree.
The first reason that going to the colleges isn't always the best option is that college education takes a lot of time. Most of the students spend four years to get a college diploma, and even a great group of people cannot get the college degree after four years. According to a report,28% of students graduate each year from Drexel University.(Dou ban,2016). Why they spend so much time just to do somethings without any assurance? Some people think that if they go to college, they can get knowledge, rather than the diploma. However, we have another method to gain knowledge with less time. The development of technology changes our lifestyle; we can get an enormous amount of information on the Network that is accessible and efficient for studying well. For instance, Open Course Ware is a long range education program, which is a software that helps students to master useful knowledge without going to college. This software can suit people’ individual needs and learning styles better, which increases efficiency. So going to the college makes people gain knowledge in a time-consuming way when there is plenty choice of efficient high-tech learning methods.
Going to a college cost a lot, and leaves many students in debt. In fact, over the past several decades, tuition rates have increased twice. The experts from BC said that out-of-state schools charge an average of $11,990, while average in-state tuition for a public school is about $7,605 per year, and private schools average $27,293 (Davis, 2011). Obviously, many families can’t afford these tuitions. And also spending all that money does not necessarily guarantee students get a job right after graduation. It is hard for graduates to find a good job since there is so much competition. Even if they do get a job, it does not usually make them feel satisfied. So why do they need to get a college degree? Is that we will probably make more money? According to Simply Hired, his average salary is $32,000 for those with a high school diploma apparently, but the average salary for a college high school is $46,000. That is not very much of a difference considering that the college graduate will most likely have significant student loans to pay back each month. For example, a private enterprise’s boss who didn’t have a degree can make money as much as 20,000 yuan on average. On the contrary, a month's wages of a highly educated teacher is average 10,000 Yuan (National Business Daily,2015). The main idea of the example is that the diploma can’t decide your salary. To get a college degree can not guarantee one to make a lot more money in the future.
Some jobs need more practical experience than the knowledge from books learned in the college. A diploma is just a certification but not the truth of a man’s ability. College degrees don't always pay back well or guarantee students a satisfactory job. I'm not saying that a formal degree wasn't required in all cases. If you want to enter a specialized profession, such as medicine or law, the official training and education are needed. However, there are many great of jobs to do without a diploma. For instance, if you want to become an actor, an artist painter, and a writer, these jobs need more personal experience than getting a college degree. According to A&E Television Networks, over 100,000 jobs only required a high school diploma, which is unbelievable. For example, Jackie Chen, when he was seven-year-old, he was dropped out school and went to Chinese Opera Research Institute. (A&E Television Networks)Although Jackie didn’t have a diploma, he used the time for school to improve himself such like practicing martial arts. Those gave him more training time and get more practical experience, so he became a successful international superstar. Compared with these people who graduated from college but haven’t personal experience, individuals who don’t go to college are easier to find the job because of their personal experience. So it means success and a diploma are not necessarily related to jobs which have a high requirement of personal experience.
However, some people think that college is such an ideal place to broaden your horizon and make more friends, which can motivate you to get success. Although college is a new experience, which gives you the chance to start fresh, reinvent or find yourself. You will learn how to interact with other people that will help you after college to find a good job. But according to a resource that 70% of friends can't help you to get success in the college because they are students who didn't have any experience or enough more (Dou ban, 2016). And, the researchers note that the real benefit of a college degree is not seen in the short term, but twenty years later you will find that the value of a college degree(Dave,2013). So this assessment of going to college makes you to make friends and to get success is unreasonable in the short term. The real benefit of a college degree does not show in the short term.
Persistence is more important for success than the college diploma. No matter you are going to school or work, persistence is the most important that is the key to success. People need to know that success seldom comes quickly on the first try; they should have the patient to insist trying until they achieve the goal. Unsuccessful people try something just a few times, and when it fails, they give up. However, successful people are different, even they fail, they won’t lose their passion. If you want to succeed, you have to work hard and be persistent. In another word, a degree is not the only way to success, as long as you want to succeed and try harder.
All in all, a degree is simply a piece of paper but not certifying whether you are successful or not and going to college will waste time, cost a lot of money, lack the personal experience, and its benefits can only be realized after decades of years. What real matters for success is persistence?
