In most cases, laws are made to protect people’s life. Yet, nowadays, many states and countries start to discuss whether people should be legalized to give up their life under certain circumstances. Death with dignity is one of these issued, which means a patient could decide to let the physician give up rescuing him/her when his/her condition deteriorates to certain level. In my opinion, it is acceptable and humane to respect a person’s choice to live or not as he/she is under great risk of overtreatment in surgery or other forms of medical cares. It’s true that life is the most precious gift to a person. Yet, the quality of life should also be assured. Otherwise, the mere lengthening of it could be meaningless and even brings pains to the patient and his/her families.

Some people may pose strong objection to the act of death with dignity by using evidence from the Bible. They believe that such act is against the saying in Bible that “Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death.” To them, this act equals euthanasia, which is also suggested by the Bible to be considered the same as “acts of murder”. However,it is generally an agreement signed before a risky surgery in case of few hope of a successful rescue to demand a passive treatment to avoid overtreatment. No additional chemicals is injected to lead to his/her death. Besides, in the process of death with dignity, no act is taken to deprive a person of his/her life because it only happens when the patient’s life is already in great danger.

The opponents might insist that the Bible teaches us to cherish life instead of end it that “No man has power over the day of death”. Characters in the Bible fight against every obstacle, every tough period in life, just like Jesus suffered for us without giving in to people who didn’t understand him.  They think that Jesus has survived his sufferings. Since our illness could never compare to his pains, we should also stick to the last second, to fight for even a small chance to live.

However, I think these opponents ignore the sentence before no man has “power over the day of death”. The Bible also says that “no man has power to retain the spirit”. The whole sentence actually means that there’s many uncontrollable power in our life. And I believe the act of death with dignity is one way to show respect to the uncontrollable power. The opponents’ insistence is not a respect to human beings. On the contrary, it treats human beings with indifference. The real respect should be to give everyone the choice to end his/her life when any struggle becomes unnecessary. The real respect to life lies in that we cherish health, virtues and love, and we face death bravely and give ourselves a life of high quality rather than to linger on in a steadily worsening condition. The one choose death with dignity should be considered to be such a brave and respectful one. A patient needs to consider many aspects before making such decision. It may be his financial situation, his families under great pressure of maintaining his life and seeing him tortured by illness, the quality of his life and so on. This decision, on one hand, saves the medical resources from being wasted in overtreatment; on the other hand, it may saves a whole family from a huge debt since a rescue surgery could cost a great deal.

Some people may still doubt whether death with dignity would be used by some devious people to gaining property from the patient. For instance, they could false the agreement or force the patient to agree on it. Yet, actions have already been taken to avoid these things. Only when the patient qualifies the provisions in the law of death with dignity can this act happen. These provisions cover from the patient’s physical and mental condition, physicians’ verification, medical certificate and background research. In addition to these requirements, the hospital usually provides plenty of time for the patient to think twice and discuss with his/her families. Thus, the cautious manner of taking the death with dignity could be of great help to prevent devious people from using it against the patient.

To conclude, I believe that a true respect to life means not only to cherish life but also to give everyone the option of death with dignity when his/her physical conditions is under the risk to rapidly worsen. This act is not a run-away from pains. Instead, it represents the person’s love and care for his beloved and his/her courage to leave this fantastic world. Meanwhile, the system of death with dignity is also improving, and such supervision can surely protect the patient’s right to life from being taken advantage of. Thus, death of dignity is plausible and should be accepted and legalized in more states and countries.
