There are some bizarre Chinese behaviors. Firstly, usually, Chinese people like to downplay themselves. If a person has learnt Chinese, they would’ve known this word “HaiXing”, which means “I am just ok, not as good as you talk about”. In fact, Chinese people prefer to keep a low profile and status as well as their interactions with other people. Therefore, when their friends compliment them, such as praising their cooking, painting and singing, they usually choose to deny it because if they accept it like westerners do, the neighborhoods would think of them as “shameless”. However, this mostly happened to traditional elderly people and middle-aged Chinese. Chinese people deem highly about one’s level of education. This dates back to thousands of years ago, while a lot of poor people pass the Imperial examination to attain fame and money. In modern time, it is all the same. However, Chinese people value certificates more than real-life experiences. Therefore, if two students are in competition for a well-paid job, one of them got a PhD’s with zero real life experience, another got a bachelor’s degree with many years’ experiences, the former one will get the job. In addition, there is one behavior which foreigners will deem to be very rude. Chinese people don’t smile at strangers. While foreigners are visiting Chinese restaurants, they will notice that almost all customers will not smile at service people such as waiters and the busboy. It is not because Chinese people are rude. The reason is that they are taught to keep their emotions inside and it will be weird to smile at a total stranger.
Therefore, when foreigners heard of Chinese people saying “My son is the worst”, they easily assume that “his son” is indeed the worst. On the contrary, his son might be the best in piano and mathematics in his class. It is true that when it comes to Chinese people’ achievements and status, they prefer to downplay it and keep a low profile. When it comes to hunting jobs, foreigners will find it hard to understand, especially the westerners who value one’s experience more than a piece of certificate. However, in China, job seekers need to be able to obtain highly valued certifications to get a good job. Besides, Chinese people respect those who get a Master’s degree and a PhD’s so these people are usually highly regarded. Foreigners usually find it weird that Chinese people do not like to smile to strangers. Many foreign visitors will misunderstand that Chinese people are not well taught enough to treat everyone with courtesy. Instead, Chinese people indeed treat others with courtesy in other ways, such as trying not to argue with others and trying to keep a harmonious relationship with everyone around.
In regards to the three bizarre Chinese behaviors, it is important to get to know how to deal with them. Firstly, as it is mentioned in the previously paragraphs, Chinese people tend to downplay their achievement. Therefore, it is not polite to give them suggestions if they are “criticizing” their sons. When a mother tells you that her son is the most terrible one, her son might be the most excellent in his class. Therefore, if you start to give advice to the mother about how to teach him well, she will be offended. The best reaction is to deny her words, saying, “No, your son is so much better than others.” Secondly, when it comes to the high regards Chinese people hold for those to have many certificates. Try not to call this behavior stupid because in order to obtain all these certificates, a person might need to stay up late for many nights or to spend years for them. Instead, try to praise that person’s hard work even though you know that he or she will deny it for the sake of humbleness. Thirdly, if you meet a Chinese person who doesn’t smile at you, try to smile, wave or say hello. Although, they are not used to do it, they know that foreigners have the habit of smiling at strangers, so they will smile at out of courtesy.
In conclusion, Chinese culture is not hard to understand because Chinese people are in fact taught to respect people and to be the most harmonious one in the world. Even if they downplay their achievements, it is their sign of humbleness and kindness. In order to not misunderstand Chinese cultural behaviors, it’s important to know that Chinese people are humble, modest, kind and also timid.
