Characteristics of the game culture

In accordance with the American culture and incidents happened in the United States, game culture has its own characteristics.

First and foremost, games reflect the spirit of exploration towards the unknown world. In many American games and films, Americans describe many imaginary stories happened in the space, which depicts a future world. Accordingly, a lot of games also adopt the thought. The themes of the games focus on the exploration of the unknown territories and unknown civilizations.

As a predominantly visual medium, the videogames always take their cues from Hollywood movies. (John Wills, 2008) For example, StarCraft, which is released by Blizzard Entertainment, has obtained the inspiration from StarCraft series movies. The plot of the game is similar to the plot of the movie. With the inspirations from Hollywood movies, games become closer to people’s feeling and taste. Because some Hollywood movies have a large audience foundation, games also receive great reputation and success.

In the second place, some game reflects American heroism. American heroism is demonstrated in many American stories, films and comics, which show the heroic spirit. It lays emphasis on the personal value and the spirit of openness and freedom. It is believed that justice can survive till the end and heroic actions are admired by all human beings.

Ideology is less a matter of overt political content and more a matter of what goes without saying in the simulation and representation that constitute these games. The game itself is just like one American dream. When playing World of Warcraft, the player could choose any characters they like. Through hard work, the player could defeat others and become the final winner.

Fourthly, games are designed according to some important incidents, which is a reflection of the real world. For example, some games reflect the anti-terrorism culture in the United States. Since the 11 September attack, terrorism is always a heated topic in the United States and the security is always a focus of the whole society. Nowadays, the number of terrorist attacks is upward. As the strongest country in the world, the United States is always threatened by the force of the terrorists. Some games, like Counter-Strike, are just designed under this background. The theme of this kind of games is anti-terrorism and the players need to defeat the scheme of the terrorists. These games provide players with an experiencing of killing terrorists and destroying their evil purposes.

One distinctive feature about this kind of games is violence. Violence is incorporated in almost all games. The content of these games are killing and defeating others. Usually, players need to buy different weapons to become stronger and there are a lot of bloody scenes when playing these games.

Another feature is crimes. A lot of American games depict the scenes of crimes, which is a real reflection of the world. Usually, men are the main players of games and crime games are designed to meet players’ taste.

Last but not least, game culture has an economic characteristic. Players need to earn money to buy weapons or equipment in almost all games. As the most powerful country in the world, the concept of economy has a wide influence on people’s mind. When playing games, players need to have an economic mind to allocate their money properly. Players need to find the most suitable and economical equipment, which is also a test for players.

To summarize the characteristics of the game culture, it is a combination of virtual world and the real world. To a certain extent, it is closely connected to the culture of the United States.

Influence on people’s life

American game industry is the strongest and most powerful in the world. Each year, a large number of games are launched to meet the demands of players. With the formality of game culture, it has imposed a great impact on people’s life.

There are some positive outcomes from playing games.

Some games are the reflection of the real world. Through playing games, people can obtain a sense of achievements.

Like coins with two sides, games culture still has negative consequences.

On the one hand, people tend to spend much money and time on playing games. With the convenient payment methodologies, people can directly pay for games online. According to ESA research, total consumers’ spending on game industry reaches to 21.53 billion dollars. (Entertainment software association, 2014) On one hand, it shows the booming of the game industry. On the other hand, it also shows the rationality of spending money on games. Moreover, young children tend to spend more time on games, which will influence their study. By playing games, they reduce the frequency of social connecting with others, which have a negative impact on their growth path.

On the other hand, violent information and crimes great influence the people’s concept of the world. Violent games inspire the violence of human being. When human beings are released from this violent instinct, and sometimes it cannot be controlled by civilization itself. Just like smoking, when a person is really addicted to smoking, it is difficult to use some legal restrictions to curb this addiction. So the violence of this kind of human instinct is released, the morality and law of human civilization need to control it from committing violence in the real world.

In a nutshell, the game culture has greatly influenced people’s life. It can bring fun and entertainment for people and it also has some social problems. It is hopeful some guidance can be provided by the games companies to avoid game addiction and the negative impact of violence and crimes.

From the above analysis, some facts can be concluded. Firstly, American game industry is booming and very successful. Secondly, the key of the success is that these games reflect the real world and represent the culture of the United States and the common sense all around the world, like exploration of the unknown world, freedom, heroism and anti-terrorism. Thirdly, game culture has influenced people’s life in social connection and release of pressure. However, it also results in some negative impact and some guidance should be provided to players especially to young teenagers.
