In the article In Search of Ordinary Heroes, the author discussed about people’s reflections upon the definitions of heroes. By introducing with her encounter with the story of Anne Frank, the author compared the image of an ordinary hero as Anne Frank with another perspective in Anne’s diary. The author than move on to engage her students, and was offered several definitions of hero and ordinary hero. The students also gave examples of ordinary heroes they know, and shared results of searches of ordinary heroes in the news. The author and students then organized an Ordinary Hero Hall of Fame together that accepts and displays all the nominees.
When reading this article, I was attracted to the students’ definitions of ordinary hero. A few of the definitions were similar to that of heroes, but one of the definitions particularly caught my attention – ‘The act itself can be heroic and the person can still be a hero if it fails’. This definition itself is very insightful as it separates the concepts of heroes and ordinary heroes. A hero must carry out distinctive, successful acts for people to remember, while an ordinary hero could be someone who step up for justice and fight for the cause of common people. I also appreciate the student’s idea of setting up the Ordinary Hero Hall of Fame because there are few stories or coverage in the news about ordinary heroes. I agree that we should admire their courage, and remember their names.
My own definition of an ordinary hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice himself/herself for the great good of common people. As long as he/she commit to a heroic act, the consequence does not really matter. One particular aspect of this ordinary hero is that he/she will positively impact those who witness or learn about the story. For instance, I am deeply impressed of the story that a man saved his neighbour’s little baby who accidently fell down from the 15th floor by catching the baby with his arms. The crushing weight of the falling child caused damage to his arms, but the man did not complain. He responded to the news reporters that he just spontaneously ran over to catch the baby. I was inspired by his courage and kind act for he offered the help no one else could. Ordinary heroes shed a light of humanity into our society and remind us that give is better than take.
