Lyrics are very important to a song. Without having good lyrics, the song will be tedious and will have no meaningful things in the song. There are many writing techniques a lyric writer uses when writing songs, among them, one of the commonly used is figurative languages. Many songwriters love to use figurative languages to express an object or their feelings indirectly through saying something else to make the songs more interesting, so that audience will explore the deeper meanings of the lyrics and think the songs to be meaningful. One of the songs that uses a lot of figurative languages is Bruno Mars’s “Grenade”.

The song “Grenade” is written by Bruno Mars, a famous American singer and songwriter who was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. “Grenade” is a song in Bruno Mars’ second album that was released in 2010. This single song hit number one on the Billboard and on other fourteen countries’ pop music ranking soon after it was released. Till 2011, the song had sold 10.2 million copies, making Bruno Mars one of the most famous singers and songwriters in the United State and in the world. “Grenade” is a heartbreaking song which tells about a man who broke up with the woman he loves because the woman actually has never loved him.

The song’s name “Grenade” is a metaphor which means that knowing that woman has cheated on him and has never loved him is like a grenade. Making “grenade” as the title of the song makes the audience wander what grenade means and curious about the song.

At the very beginning of the song, Bruno Mars sings “easy come, easy go, that’s how you live”. This very first part of the lyrics uses idiom, one of the writing techniques that is used in figurative languages. Idiom is used when the author or the songwriter is putting special meanings on the words they use. The words “come” and “go” does not mean that his lover just comes and goes, it means that the lover takes the relationship very easily and do not care about his feelings. This first line of the lyrics is very powerful that it shows the sadness and angriness of the lover just “come” and “go”.

As the songs move on, the singer continues on expressing the story between him and his lover. This part of the story, the singer tries to show the audience what his lover has done to him and why he is so sad about this woman. The lyrics “Gave you all I had and you tossed in the trash, you tossed in the trash, yes you did” uses hyperbole to express how his lover has treated him. Hyperbole is used to exaggerate the facts. The lover definitely had not given everything to her and she did not throw and tossed his love in the trash. But saying this way helps the audience to understand why he is mad at his lover.

The song continues using hyperbole in the chorus part. Bruno Mars exaggerates what he will do for her by singing “I’d catch a grenade for you, throw my head on a blade for you. I’d jump in front of the train for you,” and “I would go through all these pain, take a bullet straight through my brain. Yes, I would die for you.” He over exaggerate what he will do for her to illustrate how much he loves her and cares about her. These exaggerations demonstrate the point he is trying to make, which is he is willing to do so much for her but she will never treat him as the same way. The words “for you” at the ending of each sentence use epistrophe, meaning that the phrases have the same ending words. The repeating of “for you” at the end shows that the singer loves her so much that he is willing to do all of the things for her, but she will never do such things for him.

The song moves on to the second part after the chorus. The first line “Black, Black, Black and Blue” uses idiom again. This time the singer uses the color black and blue to portray his depression. Black shows the madness of learning the fact that she had never truly cared about him and blue expresses the melancholy feeling. The using of idiom here makes the song more vivid. Following this line, “bad woman, mad woman” uses consonance where the ending of the words “bad” and “mad” has the same sounds. The using of consonance here illustrates the characteristic of his lover. The next line “you’ll smile in my face then rip the brakes out my car” is an imagery view of what she will do to the singer. It also is a use of hyperbole here because the singer has exaggerated what she will do.

All these using of figurative languages in the song “Grenade” builds up the tone of the song, which is regretful and depressing. Without using these figurative languages, the song will not be so successful and the lyrics will not be vivid enough for the audience feel what the singer feels. “Grenade” is a good song that demonstrates the use of figurative languages.
