As far as I am concerned, the cinematic version of The Walking Dead has the effect of watering down our collective cultural imagination. In my own experience, I always prefer the original text to the movie or teleplay adaptations since the narratives in a certain book stir my imagination all the time and involve me in creation. However, the cinematic version, just as Alan Moore said, spoonfeeds us. Taking the first episode of The Walking Dead’s first season film adaptation as an example, I find the cinematic version basically “spoonfeeding” and bullying the viewers.
Frankly speaking, the original graphic novel is very brief. In the first volume--- Days Gone By, there are only eight sentences before Rich was shot, including short ones such as “This is not good/ That’s a safe bet/ Dammit/ Cover me/ Rick!!!” (The Walking Dead). A large space is left for us to imagine the appearances of the characters and surroundings of the gunplay. However, about twenty minutes are spent to describe this scene in the cinematic version. A panoramic display of the surroundings and the complete process of the high speed pursuit are presented on the screen. Besides, a long chat about women between Rick and Shane is added. The cinematic version bullies the viewers in the sense that something unexpected has been introduced and “we have been moved from imagination to the realm of direct perception---with its mix of both detail and broad focus” (Hutcheon, P23).
In a word, the cinematic adaptation of The Walking Dead is guilty of watering down our collective cultural imagination, at least the first episode of the first season. On the one hand, it intervenes in the viewers’ imagination by giving a definite display of what may entails thousands of possibility in graphic novel. On the other hand, it bullies the viewer because of its “unrelenting and forward-driving” characteristics. Furthermore, instead of the casual and relaxing atmosphere of reading narrative books, the viewers are always put into a preoccupied and nervous state by the cinematic shots.
