Nat Turner, born on October 2nd, 1800 and died on November 11th, 1831, was famous to the great majority of human beings for his being the leader of the slave rebellion in 1831. What is a pity to say is that this slave rebellion was doomed to fail in the end and Nat Turner had even sacrificed for it. The following will be about some detailed analysis about Nat Turner so that it can be easier to understand about him and his slave rebellion.
Nat Turner was born in Southampton County, Virginia where slavery prevailed and where there were more blacks than whites. It was a common scene that those slaves were bullied and oppressed by the slaveholders due to the existence of both slaves and slaveholders. Being an African-American slave himself, Nat Turner had personally suffered a lot from slavery and he would not like to be maltreated as a slave any more. Also, his mother educated him to hate slavery all the time. When Nat Turner was very young, he was especially clever and he was able to read and write earlier than his peers and he grew up in a religious environment out of his spending most of his time reading stories in Bible. Because he had read Bible a lot, he had visions from time to time which were regarded as the messages from God and he had in the meantime formed the habit to preach Bible to others around, resulting in his being called “the Prophet” (United States History. 2015).
From the above, we can easily have a fair knowledge that Bible had really exerted so crucial impacts toward Nat Turner that we can even say that the rationale why Nat Turner would launch the slave rebellion lied in that he held that it was a signal from the God that indicative of his fighting for the rights of all the slaves against the white slaveholders. He held that God wanted him to attack directly the institution of slavery and therefore later on he put it into practice on August 21st, 1831 together with some of his slave fellows as was also the first day of slave rebellion (About education. 2015). Since the beginning of the slave rebellion, he and his fellow slaves killed all the whites they encountered when they went through the whole county and they kept recruiting more followers to participate in the slave rebellion together with them. In the end, they killed 55 white slaveholders, which may suggest their success in the rebellion (About education. 2015).
However, the consequence of the rebellion was that the white slaveholders killed over 200 African Americans after the incidence of the rebellion out of their extreme anger. Nat Turner was hanged on November 11, 1831 and it was right the end of his life (About education. 2015). That is why the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner is called a failed slave rebellion. Though the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner was a failure at last, he had enabled the white slaveholders not to oppress the blacks too much more or less.
