As more and more exchange students are enrolled in North USA, and participate in some writing course aimed at them, Silva raises some thoughts over the ethics in the ELS course when taking the language ability of the students from no-English speaking countries into consideration. It is my belief that an instructional program that does not respect its students if primed for failure and almost certain to engender resentment(Silva, 1997,Page1).It is her wish that the article should be thought-provoking on the issue to ESL course. In terms of her opinions, there are four basic ways in which ESl writers need to be respected: they need to be understood, placed in suitable leaning contexts, provided with appropriate instruction and evaluated fairly.(Silva, 1997,Page1)

First, generally speaking, ESL writers produce not so much effective results as NES writers, and are highly likely to fail the expectations of their judges. Undeniably, there exist some disparities of composition process, discourse level and linguistic performance between ESL and NES writers , as it should be recognized that ESL writers come from many different cultures, rhetorical traditions, and linguistic background, thus familiarize themselves with different strategies of writing. Additionally, full awareness of different students from different backgrounds also takes a large share of understanding them, which is the solid foundation for the ethical treatment.

Second, ESL students require appropriate learning contexts based on their difference from NES writer. ESL writers should be offered placement options as many as possible in line with their preference and capacities. For teachers, it requires patience and certain amount of knowledge when instructing them. Some materials, curricula and practices should be adjusted to them. Besides, Silva points out that these additional requirements need to be met by requiring fewer assignments or preferably, enrolling fewer students in classes. (Silva, 1997,Page2)

Third, it is important to note that appropriate instruction should be provided for ESL students. Basically, teachers are required to regard students as intelligent humans with great stories to tell. Furthermore, some writing curriculum should be within the limits of the main topic including rhetorical, linguistic and strategic issue, instead of stretching itself over a wild range of history, literature, and culture discussions. When it comes to students writing, they should be guaranteed enough freedom of their own topics, which could greatly motivate them. It is her suggestion that students should be given control of the why and what of writing, and that teachers focus on the how, where, and when on facilitating rather than controlling.( ( Silva, 1997,Page3) )

Fourth, teachers should evaluate ESL students fairly, as language acquisition is a gradual and slow process. Besides, they are under the influence of their culture backgrounds, which call for some patience and understanding. Finally, acceptance indicates anything beyond the results.

In summary, teachers should recognize difference of ESL writers from NES, offer them proper contexts and instruction, as well as evaluate them fairly. In the process of teaching them how to write, it is really important to be patient, tolerable, and instructional. By treating students with respect and understanding, they are bound to make rapid progress.
