Through weeks of learning, I have got a deeper understanding of Sikhism, including its origins, its founder and the beliefs it upholds.Among many of its beliefs, two of them make a deep impression on me, and I reflect on them a lot.

First of all, I agree with the convictionSikhs hold on life and death, and I am even comforted by it. Having experienced people around passing away theses years, I became so afraid of death, especially the death of others. Saying goodbye to someone I love seems to deprive all the happiness and joy I possess. However, according to Guru Nanak, although no one is exempt from death, death provides an opportunity to reap the good that one has sown in life. With the combination of the idea of reincarnation and the idea of an afterlife in a paradise-like court of God, it seems that death need not be feared.

It is true that death is inevitable, and what we can do is to cherish every moment, behave properly and do good deeds when we are alive, since the accounts of good and bad are kept and must be faced eventually. After fully enjoying the life, which is a gift from Kartar, we come to the paradise, reunion with everyone we love, and review the happiest moments we spent together. I think the belief that emphasizes a life free of worry about the afterlife, but focused on one's ethical actions in this life encourage people to live brilliantly.

Moreover, Sikhs believe that, on the Sikh spiritual path, individuals need to protect themselves fromhaumai (one's false sense of importance) and other"five vices"including kam (lust), krodh (anger), lobh (greed), moh (clinging), and haunkar (pride). The same goes for our path to success.People are easy to be driven by greed and lust if they want to get something desperately. People also tend to become self-important when they get attention and recognition. Both the false sense of self and the "five vices"are difficult for people to notice when they indulge in them and lose themselves, but these horrible things may totally ruin people’s life. As Sikhs firmly believe, when individuals putthe self at the center of everything, they lose reality, compassion and empathy, which are replaced by tyranny. From my point of view, on the path to success and when we achieve fame, we should always insist on being ourselves.

There are other Sikhfacts that surprise me a lot. For example, Guru Nanak spoke highly of women. The social makeup of community founded by Guru Nanakincluded a broad mix of classes. These things were rare in India of the day and represent new developments.

In sum, every religion has its own cream, and we should learn to appreciate it.
