In our class of social justise, there are several philosophies regard to Modern Moral Relativism are mentioned. It has always been a controversial issue between philosophers and people who has the opposite oppinion against that of philosophers. Since there are various views of comtemporary moral relativism and each of the views differ a lot from others, it is obvious that modern moral relativism can not be simply defined or judged by a particular phenomenon along, but it can only be judged by a moral standard of a certain group of people. When taking about moral relativism, it usually leads to an emprirical position, or a metaethical position, or a normative position. In the following paragraphs, I would like to discuss my point of views on major philosophies that are connected to modern moral relativism.

Firstly, the empirical thesis is the one that has been mostly utilized in moral relativism. The major philosophy falls under the empirical thesis is Descriptive Moral Relativism (DMR), which refers to the fact that the existed universal moral disagreements are much more powerful than the rest in the world. Till now, there still have many different points of views on DMR. Speaking of the metaethical position, it tends to deal with the claims of the resolution of the basic moral disagreements. From this perspective, they prefer to have a particular organization that has the sole power of moral judgments established for the society in order to satisfy everyone’s perception of moral standards. Another philosophy associated with modern moral relativism is Metaethical Moral Relativism (MMR). The main concern of this philosophy is about the moral judgements in a particular culture. They suppose that the differences existed in two different cultures cannot be fixed so that one cannot make cross-cultural moral judgement. There is no absolute answer of right or wrong for this position of philosophy. Last but not least, moral relativism can occationally be led to a normative position of philosophy. This type of philosophy deals with actions that should be taken to resolve disagreement on moral issues. What is the word that philosophers say the most frequently nowadays regarding to the normative position is tolerance, which refers to the tolerance of the immorality which cannot be accepted and resolved by our moral standards.

On several major stages of the developmental progress of moral relativism, many profound works were borned by several moral relativism figures. Among those, Edward Westermarck completed the historical transation of moral relativism from anthropology to philosophy. He has been considered as the major figure of the empirical and metaethical philosophies. Moreover, there are another two influential figures, called Richard B. Brandt and John Ladd, also made great contributions to the empirical philosophy. In their works, they put a great deal of attentions on the aspect of the moral standards in various cultures.

Thesedays, there are more issues related to moral relativism, such as human rights, medical ethics, and feminist philosophy etc. After this class of modern moral relativism, I gained the knowledge of the developmental progress of moral relativism, as well as major philosophies and figures associated with it. From my perspective, the phrase “relativism” pertaining to that morality is not absolute. Obstacles of making moral agreement include culture and subjectivism. Even people of the same society have the same moral standards, they still cannot reach to a moral agreement due to subjectivity. For example, “Height is objective.” However, it is hard for people to make judgment on the question of what height is considered to be tall, because whether a person is tall or not is judged differently by people. Therefore, the determination of immorality needs to depend on the nature of the action itself. I believe that there will be an universal agreement on moral standards or policy for a special moral department to make moral judgment in the future.
