The Polaroid photo of my grandpa and me is on the table. I was standing by him and holding his arm in a blue and white plaid dress with a shiny smile, even my hair style is quite different from now. My grandpa was benevolently smiling to the camera although he didn’t smile a lot. The background is a narrow but long alley with traditional Chinese northern cities’ features in Beijing. The sky was in extremely blue when there was no smog in Beijing yet. The fallen leaves were almost full of the background and on the ground. We took it in 2009 during Chinese National Holiday, when my grandpa was not in good health. It was the only photo that had only the two of us.

Treating photography as a way of recording a certain moment in my life, definitely came from my grandpa. He always held a Polaroid camera wherever he went, and loved taking family group photos even if my parents and I thought this family ritual was kind of repetitive and boring.

But when my grandpa was diagnosed with heart failure and had to live in the hospital for treatment, he asked me to collect all of the photos he took and give them to him. I was shocked by how photos, when displayed in a chronological order, could perfectly embody the power of time. I saw how my family grew older and how beautiful my grandma was when she was young; what my cousin looked like when she was a child; how many places my parents have been traveled together before my birth… I suddenly realized that what those Polaroid photos showed me was not solely the scenes and memories in the past, but brought me a sense of happiness, which made me feel like the moments of warmth has been lasting all the time.

The most significant characteristic of Polaroid photos is that every single picture is completely different from each other and perhaps even “defective” since we might wish to make it even better somehow. However, Polaroid photos capture the most genuine states, compared to digital photos that cannot be retouched or physically held, and I can still recall the excitement of seeing the image gradually appear on film paper. Only by truly seeing candid pictures, or holding them in one’s hands, can people feel strength from pictures. I started to understand why my grandpa always took his Polaroid with him: he wanted to keep everything and everyone he loved with him.

The Polaroid camera is now in my hands. It’s first time that camera in my hand, how to use it for daily life. Why is it important to take photos of people? More oberserver? By photographing, the exceedingly fascinating and charming world can be freeze-framed forever. As a photographer, I am keen on taking pictures of beautiful scenes which can be appreciated by a variety of people worldwide. In fact, I took a picture of a limpid and azure lake near my hometown, however, as time elapses, the lake has been contaminated tremendously and the only thing that proves that the clear lake once existed is the picture that I took reminding everyone who sees it of the significance of protecting the environment. I believe that it is a very special and difficult task for me, but I will always try to make some contributions to this society no matter what.

Each photo records a part of my journey. The photos embody the best moments in our lives and preserve our perfect imperfections that I love.
