Though leadership and managerialism have something in common, there is a great difference between managerialism and leadership. Social work value is an important factor to offset managerial reform in social work organization. It implies that human service values are not facilitated as the managerialism increases with the under-representation of social staffs. There is a challenge existing between humanitarian values promoting and the acknowledgement of human welfare services complexities in a professional organizational circumstance. Therefore, social work leadership plays an important role in human service organization.
I will plan to set up an international organization whose aim is to help those lonely old men. It is named with “care for the old”. As we all know, more and more old people live alone because their adult children are busy with their own work or their partners passed away earlier than them. Professional consultants who hold a bachelor degree will be employed in this service organization. Social workers employed in this service organization must have a high quality with a major in psychology and nursing (Warren and Burt, 1985). Experienced social workers from all over the world are preferred in this service organization. The social workers must have certain knowledge of psychology which is a necessary quality that employer should have. Because the old people always have some psychological problem because of their lack of interaction with the outside world and fewer care from their children.
There are different styles of leadership such as authoritarian leadership, participative leadership, free rein leadership and situational leadership. It is necessary for our service organization to apply all the four leadership styles at the beginning or for a certain time. However, situational leadership is the principle leadership style in our service organization. Situational leadership does not need any new skills or any new approaches. However, the situation, the followers’capacity and the leaders’ capacity are three important factors which have an effect on the decisions of leadership (Beulah and Burt, 1975). Among them the capacity of both them is the key factor, so I should keep a flexible mind when faced with different situations. Besides, our social workers must have the ability to assess the maturity of serviced customers, including the individuals, a whole family and disadvantaged groups. They should apply various techniques and methods to act independently as the situation or customers’ maturity level changes. For example, if the old man even does not have the ability to complete the basic work and the motivation to try to change his recent situation. The social workers should give clear direction to tell him how, when and where to complete the task and also tell him the importance to completing the task. Certain award is a necessary. The customers’ benefits must be ensured through the techniques and approaches existed under the situational leadership.
