A simple description of operations management is the activities that relate to the creation of goods and services through the transformation of inputs to outputs. Operations management concerns every aspect of the organisation and every organisation as an operation function because they produce some type of product or services. A major decision for operation managers is using the resources of the organisation effectively and finding the best way to produce goods and services that satisfies the customers. Flexibility, innovation, and creativity are need for the improvement of process, product and services to attain customer satisfaction.

The company has over 300 stores providing over 9,500 products in 37 countries across the world. The company has about 31 distribution centres in 16 countries, supplying goods to IKEA stores. It has about 45 trading service offices in 31 countries. This enables the company to develop close a relationship with our 1,350 suppliers in 50 countries. Efficiency and absolute free creativity of designers is what has made the company one of the most successful companies in the world.

IKEA has developed a unique business which many have tried to emulate. It has led to global success and revenues of over €19bn annually and has become the world's largest furniture retailer. The company's motto is 'To create a better everyday life for the many people' this has made the company to design simple, important and high quality product accessible to everyone.

Operations management is the activities that relate to the creation of goods and services through the transformation of inputs into outputs. Operations management concerns every aspect of the organisation in any business and it is important in producing goods and services. The ability to respond to consumers and market requirements quickly, at a low cost, and with high quality, is crucial to attaining profitability and growth through increased market share, effective and efficient operation management can achieve that. Operation management plays a strategic role in an organisation competitive success. Operation management is about managing processes. All operation activities produce goods and services by managing these processes to transform or change the state of something to produce outputs.

IKEA has got an operation management system that enables it to meet the operation management performance objectives. They produce at a low cost, their product have a high quality standard that meets required specifications without errors. They produce quickly in order to meet customers demand and also deliver the product in time. Their customers can depend on them delivering the right thing they ordered and according to their specification. The company can also be flexible in terms of the volume of product it can produce, the time in which it would take and they are innovative.

Fundamentally all operation activities exist to create value for the customers; IKEA inputs equipment, Labour, facilities and raw materials and transforms them in a way that adds value to the consumers to get an output that is satisfactory. The term value does not just apply to the value the customer gets at the end of the transformation process in the product or service; it also includes the value added from the beginning to end of the process through enhancing speed, assurance, safety and security of service at a low total cost and at acceptable level of risk. The set of process used to create the value for the customer is called the value chain.

Operations management is primarily concerned with the organization resources.

However, the way an organisation manages its operation impacts both its stakeholders and its external market, thus that makes operation an important part of an organisations strategy. There are three levels of strategy; corporate, business and functional strategy. Strategy is more than one decision; it is the total series of decision and actions made by the company that affects its long time goals, direction and accomplishments. Strategic decisions bring a company closer to its goals or objectives set by its stakeholders, it defines the company's position in relative to its environment.

Corporate strategy is the highest level of strategy amongst all the strategy levels. It sets the long-term guidance and scope for the whole organization. If the organization comprises more than one type of business, corporate level strategy will be concerned with what they should be doing, how resources will be used and shared between them, Organizations often express their strategy in the form of a corporate mission or vision statement, this would be defined by the stakeholders.

For any company to achieve its corporate strategy its must make sure that all its business function is working properly like operation, finance, and marketing. The operation function is responsible for producing the company's goods and services. The operation function of any company like IKEA would make sure that it is doing everything possible to try and achieve the corporate strategy of the company. Corporate strategy helps organisation set their priorities in achieving the company's goals and the corporate strategy helps the organisation set its own operation strategy in achieving the goals of the company. The Operations strategy makes a plan for the operation function that supports the corporate and business strategy; it interprets the strategies and lays out a plan on how the operation would look like. Consequently decisions regarding operations strategy directly affect decisions on the company's structure and infrastructure of the company. This includes selection of the facilities, processes, type of technology, quality control decisions, skills and employee's salary. The role of the corporate strategy is to give the organisation an overall guideline in its operations.

In IKEA, logistics covers transportation, warehousing, material handling, inventory management, packaging and logistic information system. The logistics system can be divided into two parts which are outbound and inbound logistics. Inbound logistics involves providing all the materials and goods required for making the products and outbound logistics deals with how the manufactured products move from final assembly through distribution and warehousing to the hands of the customers. Some text books simply refer to logistics as an extension of physical distribution management.
