They will consider more about the price and quality of a service and it seems they prefer companies with lower prices. In fact it is not always so.

According to concept of market power, even Telstra increases prices for certain service, its customer base will not become smaller or they will not give up Telstra but to choose Optus. Market power will increase customer loyalty. The general relation of supply and demand with quantity and price is as Figure1 shown. When price raising, quantity of demand will lose and the supply will arise because of interest in this condition.

But firms with strong market power, like Telstra in telecommunication market, can even be considered as the ”price maker”. When pries are raised by Telstra, it will not lose no or less customers to their competitors compared to the normal firms(Figure2).

But market power is not always good for market health which may occurs as a result of market power. They may cause anti-market behavior. If Telstra has monopoly power, telecommunication market has danger getting into trouble. Government and other organizations has the responsibility to regulate all the participants in the market to avoid monopoly. Relative measures should be taken such as the Telecommunications Act and the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act.

D) concluding remarksIn conclusion, market power is an important concept in economic activities. Knowing the regular and features of market power is helpful for keeping a healthy market environment. For telecommunication market, companies can use this concept to achieve a good performance and raise service quality to win more customers. Fair competition is so essential for all the participants to get what they want and meet their demands. To avoid monopoly, groups involved such as governments and committees should take measures. Every side of the telecommunication market should take efforts to make mutual interests and make a good market order to make long-term development.
