Introduction
The role of emotional intelligence in individual success both at study and at work has been acknowledged by an increasing population. Past studies have it that a good management of emotional intelligence buttresses successful study and work (Byron 2003). Intra- and interpersonal perception, which is an important component of emotional intelligence, also play a significant role in leading to individual success at study and at work, and should be given attention to. The importance of emotional intelligence overweighs that of general intelligence (Singh 2009), which makes the study of intra- and interpersonal perception more essential. As the saying goes, “know thy self, know thy enemy”, a better understanding of yourself and others can bring with you triumph in a battle. Intra- and interpersonal perception works in a similar as this long-established saying, though interpersonal perception involves knowing more than your enemies. The knowledge of oneself and the others can be utilized to engender success. In the light of existing studies on emotional intelligence, intra- and interpersonal perception in particular, this study examines how such perception contributes to individual success both at university and later at work.
Workings of Intra- And Interpersonal Perception
There are three ways in which intra- and interpersonal perception exerts positive influences on success both at university study and later at work. Interlocked with each other, these ways work magic.
First, intrapersonal perception enables one to make good self-evaluation, prediction, and response. Knowing oneself can provide clues on the next action. In the research on the influence intrapersonal perception on academic success, Bercher (2012) finds that correct self-monitoring and self-regulating make students achieve higher scores at examinations. She asserts that if students know themselves in terms of their strength and weakness in some areas of knowledge prior to the exam, they can plan, monitor, and modify their study, and then they can choose which section of knowledge to work on, and then they can grasp the learning strategies suitable for them, and finally make good preparation for the exam which they achieve better performance. Provided people know themselves and develop appropriate learning or working strategies on the basis of their self-knowing, and they will be on the right path to success. For instance, when an employee is aware that his unpopularity among colleagues and employers results from his gossip and decides not to judge on others, he will improve the relationship between his co-workers and thus stand a good chance for promotion. Moreover, a person who is competent at self-perception can establish a good image of him/herself and be more successful. Singh (2013) finds out leaders’ intrapersonal competencies weigh in the employees’ perception of the leaders and contribute to employees’ satisfaction towards their job. In this case, leaders who have a better understanding of themselves as good leaders will get more support from their employees and achieve success. In other words, leaders who recon they themselves possess the qualities of a leader succeed in their work. Therefore, intrapersonal perception provides a good opportunity to evaluate oneself, do the right thing next and leave good impression on others.
Second, interpersonal perception leads to good rapport with others and thereafter success in study and career. Understanding others makes one indentify with them and elicit their support. For instance, if a Spanish employer, well informed of Japanese culture where punctuality is the policy, behaves like Japanese and show up in time in all occasions required by his company, he will be seen in the inner circle of Japanese and given respect and support. A person who is regarded as a member of a group by others is acknowledged in his/her surroundings, and is more likely to get things done (Abele and Stasser 2008). If the person is perceived within a team, he is greeted with welcome and liking, which increase his chance to succeed. The identity as a group member is achieved on the basis of interpersonal perception. Abele and Stasser (2008, pp. 578) further conclude that positive interpersonal impressions can be produced by successful coordination which is conductive to success. Stumpf (2009) points out consultant-client relationships play an important part in companies’ success and that it is imperative for professional service firms to develop customers who have good impression on the firms. The role of interpersonal perception is further testified by Singh (2013) who discovers that employees’ good perception of their leaders contributes to the success of the latter. Thus, interpersonal perception helps in forming positive impression on others and establishing good relationship with them and eventually leading to success.
Third, intrapersonal perception and interpersonal perception interact to prompt success at study and at work. Knowing oneself is not enough because one needs to win others’ support so as to succeed. Intrapersonal perception lays a solid foundation for interpersonal perception, in that the former sheds light on how to communicate and interact with others, and shape one’s perceived image in others’ mind. When one knows both oneself and others, he can optimize the internal and external factors to achieve success. For instance, students who are aware of themselves and their peers acquire the information about their places in the whole class, design study plan customized to them and get help from their peers who they know they can turn to. Suppose these students had no knowledge about others, they could not know to what extent they should make progress; imagine they merely have the information about their peers but not that about themselves; they would feel perplexed at what kinds of improvement they aspire to. The gregariousness of human beings dictates that they cannot live alone and manage to do things alone. Intrapersonal perception and interpersonal perception have to be combined together so as to succeed in the society.
Conclusion
To conclude, positive intra- and interpersonal perception benefits individual success both at university study and later at work. People have to know themselves so as to evaluate them correctly, predict developments, and react to the future situations; they must know others so that they can elicit support from others; and finally they combine self-knowledge and knowledge of others to the advantage of their cases. In these three ways, success is produced by good use of intra- and interpersonal perception.
