In the advertisement, the symbol of McDonald’s meal options led to the referent of a specific kind of meal that we could see and could eat in its real-life entities. On the other hand, the thought, or reference, coming to our mind is the existence of energy and enjoyment of material ownership with short-rest to us which always accompanied with our high-speed, pressured, single-hour scheduled daily work or living. Signifier is the meal icons, and signified is what constructs in our mind by receiving this picture, which could be a happiness life, a satisfactory tasty meal, a well-planned high-pace work style or the feeling of possessions. Different persons had different understanding and feeling of this advertisement, but the common shared perception would easily meet the marketing goal of the manager which was the variety of the products provided by McDonald’s of its food. This billboard used spatial elements and context to serve its denotation and connotation purpose for customers. When people walk on the street and see the billboard outdoors, they could directly get the time perception, know what it aimed to tell, and perceive real consciousness and understanding of the conduction of timely optional choices and were encouraged to go to the restaurant to see how it was and get involved in the interest of getting one of them.
The meal items shown on the picture of the billboard delivered iconic meanings, but its purpose was effectively transferred by indexical method. The sundial lines in parallel with real sun shadow at the time presents indexical meaning of which time offered what kind of food and meal, with clear time meaning indexed. At 12 o’clock of noon, the sun shadow would straightly object downward to the rightest item which referred to the end while the aluminum arches mounted above the billboard with McDonald’s M shape clearly shadowed on the board there. We could see that the noon M shadow signby the technology design constructed symbolic meaning which referred to the concept of the brand, McDonald’s. The indexical meaningtargeted the customers with clear presentation and attractive product icons, which realized the marketing objective as prompting variety characteristics. Its denotative meaning is just the offered options of meals, which referred to what you would get in the restaurant for meal; nevertheless, the connotative meaning is much more, as explained above. It connotes that you can get whatever you want for your breakfast, helping you pass the tricky morning time and welcome a sunshine new day; the offers are scientifically scheduled and designed in accord with what you need and what is good for you.
