Every president's Inaugural address is like an open book on what the president is offering its people and the world. Our presidents over the years have had distinct messages on what their plan was for the next four years. Each president, for the most part, had the same challenges and concepts as the presidents they succeeded. These presidents through their inaugural addresses assured the people of the United States and the countries of the world that they would work towards the defense of the United States and its allies, to honor our treaties and promises in good faith, and to continue the disarmament of nuclear weapons throughout the world.

The United States has worked very hard at defending itself and its allies for the past 70 years over the spread of communism and now the new threat of terrorism within the 21st century. In Ronald Reagan's second inaugural address he talked about" reducing the cost of national security" but later talked about creating "a security shield that would destroy nuclear missiles before they reach their target" making the use of inter-continental ballistic missiles useless under the Star Wars plan(1985). This in a way, Ronald Reagan was conveying to Soviet Union that no matter how many nuclear missiles they produce we will be able to defend ourselves against them. In an excerpt from George H.W. Bush's inaugural address he had stated" we know how to secure a more just and prosperous life of man on earth" and also had stated in this address "the new closeness with the Soviet Union consisted both with our security and with progress" meaning the Soviet Union was no longer a threat to the United States and that the United States felt more secure because of that fact (1989). In 1990 George H.W. Bush led coalition forces into Kuwait to defend our allied countries in the Gulf. The son of the former president Bush, George W. Bush said in his 2001 inaugural address "we will defend our allies and our interests" and in 2003 led the campaign in the invasion of Iraq under the assumption that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and posed a threat to the security of allied Gulf nations that we needed to defend.

United States has had a long outstanding relationship with Europe and a commitment of peace and security in Europe. In 1949 the United States and non-communist countries in Europe signed a treaty called the North Atlantic Treaty. In Richard M. Nixon's second Inaugural address he stated "we shall respect our treaty commitments" clearly stating that we will honor treaties like the North Atlantic Treaty in protecting Europe from communism (1973). George H.W. Bush stated in his 1989 inaugural address "when America says something, America means it, whether a treaty or an agreement" standing by the idea that no matter what president signed the treaty or agreement we will honor it. Following in his footsteps George W. Bush stated in his 2005 inaugural address "our country has accepted obligations that are difficult to fulfill and would be dishonorable to abandon" clearly referring to Iraq and the liberation of the Iraqi people.

The Atomic bomb ended World War II but left a scar in the minds of Americans, and shocked the rest of the world in fear. Knowing the destructive power of the atom John F. Kennedy's Inaugural address to the world talked about disarmament and control of nuclear weapons. John F. Kennedy stated that "neither of our nations take comfort from our present course both sides overburdened by the cost of modern weapons" meaning both nations, the US and Russia were spending huge amounts of money building nuclear stockpiles while heading towards mutual "self-destruction" (1961). In Richard M. Nixon's second inaugural address he stated "we shall work for limitation of nuclear arms, and to reduce the danger of confrontation between the great powers" mainly between the US and the Soviet Union (1973). Jimmy Carter stated in his Inaugural address that "the world is still engaged in a massive armament race" between Russia, China and the United States and also had stated the "ultimate goal-the limitation of all nuclear weapons from the earth" (1977). Ronald Reagan following close to what Jimmy Carter said in 1977, he said in his second Inaugural address "we seek the total elimination one day of nuclear weapons from the face of the earth" and led to the end of the Cold War with the Soviet Union (1985). In 2001 George W. Bush said in his first inaugural address "we will confront weapons of mass destruction" purely stating a disarmament of nuclear weapons to the countries of the world by forceful means. In Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural address he stated"with old friends and former foes" (meaning the former Soviet Union) "we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat" most likely directing it towards Iran and North Korea.

It has been a long-standing commitment from the Presidents of the United States to defend its great nation and allies of the world, to adhere to and abide by the treaties set forth by former presidents and allied nations. To lead the continuing effort to disarmament and eradication of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction as stated in many of our fine Presidents inaugural speeches.
