Communications is the newly developing study of how different sectors and agencies communicate with one another in modern society. Advertisement agencies are a vital part for many companies to promote their brand and product, thus getting a burgeoning development. Through well-designed commercials and ads launched in various channels, a company can gain recognition and awareness. In the communications industry, a company has to have a good understanding of marketing strategy and quick response compared with other industries. Quick response is vital for a successful deal and for maintaining strong relationship with partners. Take the simulation for example: our agency offered multiple advertising services such as creating billboards, posters, and making videos, our prices vary depending on the complexity of the work and its producing cost, such as the use of color ink, we help the customers to publicize his products and to increase avenue of his company. You will find the fact that every other industry requires our services because without us it becomes difficult to enter the market due to low advertising. We can even say that, without advertising, any good product may face a failure and with advertising, any bad product may hit a success. Conducting this simulation has deepened and broadened our knowledge on the advertising industry: the advertising industry needs creativity and keeping pace with time.

From the reading, we learn lots of information and facts about Canadian communication history. First, “The act of logging into, out of, and back into Facebook is part of the daily rhythm of Internet use for a large number of Canadians. One major Internet traffic monitoring company recently claimed that Facebook was the second most popular website among Canadians, just behind Google. “ (Wagman, 2010)  It shows that Facebook as a social media is very popular in Canada.  On the other hand, it also illustrates communication is one of the most important thing between individuals and Facebook now becomes the most important tool of communications. For example, when students do a group assignment, they can use Facebook to discuss with their group members; some international students who are far away from their parents can chat with them instantly instead of writing paper-letter and reaching their parents after a month. In addition, they can post pictures and videos about their lives to share with their friends; they can update their current conditions in any time and receive other’s comments at the first time. So there is more and more people use Facebook in Canada. The distance between people becomes closer with the existence of these social media. Second, “Canada, much more than the United States, has become a lively terrain for the introduction of these new newspapers. Four of our major, national newspaper conglomerates (Quebecor, Transcontinental, Torstar, and CanWest) have been involved in the launch of free newspapers, often in cities where they publish longstanding traditional dailies. Montreal now has at least six daily newspapers; Toronto, with only one official language, has just as many.” (Straw, 2010) The paragraph shows us that news industry will be always developing because many people are still willing to read newspapers to get the information they want. I think it is because of the authenticity and authority of newspapers. They are traditional media, they have a mature system to collect information and display them. In addition, newspapers update everyday that people can read and know the latest and newest things happened around the world. From newspapers, people can read international news, increase knowledge, broaden their vision, and so on. Third, with the development of the Internet, online games become important in people’s daily life, especially for children and the youngsters. “As children and youth have expanded their presence on the Internet (Buckingham, 2003; Holloway & Valentine, 2003; Jenkins, 2001), they have been depicted by some as adopting increasingly participatory roles in the creation of online content through their contribution to online environments, games, and communities.” (Chung & Grimes, 2005)It shows, youth and children play an important role in the Internet.. They are deeply involved in the internet communication and contribute a lot to the development of the internet. For example, almost every children and youth plays online games. In the games they can communicate to each other, it is just like a small virtual society in which they can enjoy their game and also they can enjoy communication without face to face. What is more, for the international students, they cannot go home very frequently so they have to use internet to communicate with their families. This shows students contribute to the online communities, they also promotes the online chatting software’s development. In Canada, almost every Chinese student will use a new online software, which is called WeChat, produced by Tencent, to communicate with their families. Thus we see that communication through the internet is very important to every individual.

Based on that communication can be conducted via a kind of media which can be spread in every corner of the world, advertising becomes easier and our group decided to do that. In the simulation, our group is an advertising agency, and we own 7 credits at first. During the process, our group communicated with other groups to promote and do business with each other. For example, we have signed a contract with the farming company to make a strawberry poster for them. But after that, our agency needs to find a production company to exactly produce the product for us. We do the design part and outsource the producing part to save cost and focus on one thing. From this process, we have noticed and learnt that business can not be done just between two companies, it involves many other parties. According to the reading, Mary Milliken states that User-generated online video (UGOV) is a dynamic information and communication technology (ICT) that provides a mechanism for interactive expression and democratic discourse. It has allowed hundreds of thousands of audio-visual content creators and gatherers to upload, at no cost, clips and video blogs to video portal sites on the World Wide Web such as YouTube, Revver and Google Video. (3)

The content of this quote is parallel to our simulation. YouTube is the world famous websites that provides millions of videos created by normal people or specialized agency. Nowadays. People like to search, watch or upload videos on it. But not everyone is aware of that without a mechanism between the media vehicles, YouTube or any other video websites may not success in doing this. This is one of the points that we have learnt from the first simulation period.

From the weekly readings and notes, we can see that news industry is still very important in our daily life, even it has been a rough time for the newspaper in the past few years (Sauvageau 29 ). According to the notes, there are over 35000 daily newspapers in India, which means a lot of people still choose to read newspaper. Basically that is because of the reliability, impact and prominence of newspaper and journalists. Related to the simulation, the first contract that we signed with is the newspaper company. That is because of we feel that the recognition and reliable morality of newspaper company may provide better advertising service for our agency. Moreover, Sauvageau indicates that: Newspaper readers, especially those who read the broadsheets, are better informed than non-readers and are more likely to be involved in the political and democratic life of their country. On the contrary, people who watch a great deal of television, especially commercial TV, are less informed about public affairs. ( 31)From the quote we may realize that under the condition of this society which technology and commercial pastimes are growing stronger everyday., reading newspaper especially the broadsheets is still one of the best ways for people to integrate with their societies and engage in the political and democratic events which happened in their countries.

After all the discuss about communications, advertising industry, and newly developed online media and traditional media, we can conclude that we can’t live without communications with others, we may communicate for knowing something, sharing something and persuade others, we may communicate through letter, telephone, mobile phone, social media; we may communicate with family members, friends, teachers, classmates, even strange person online. How and what to communicate becomes more and more important for our life and business. Advertising industry also play an important role in boosting economic development. And social media advertising becomes the most important part of the promotion, because nearly everybody get access to the social media, and it is cost-effective compared with traditional media. But as for the traditional media, we can either ignore its power. Those who are enthusiastic about political affairs would rather choose traditional media.[-Z]
