In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield, the authors describe the decadent lifestyle of the upper class and their ruthlessness. Fitzgerald explains the novel into a time or society that is of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. However, Katherine Mansfield expresses her opinions of the attitude and behavior that the upper class own towards the people from lower class, basing on her childhood home at Wellington, New Zealand. Although the authors describe the similar lifestyle and both use the style of the narration to lead the development of the story, they do so using different methods of writing when describing the stories.
Throughout The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald describes Daisy as a girl who is the dream of Gatsby but also the one who ruins his life. Daisy, in a way, is the symbol of youth, gold and status, which many young Americans take as American Dream. She is seen as a beautiful, rich, innocent and pure princess that every man wants to possess but actually she’s a woman with very complicated character. She's got a killer voice: “I looked back at my cousin, who began to ask me questions in her low, thrilling voice”(The Great Gatsby,12). She knows well to use her voice and beauty to attract men and struggle for her life. However, she’s married a rich man-- Tom but her life is not happy because of her husband’s affair. Yet,she would like to keep silent because she knows that having a husband with a high status is more important than having a man’s love. Fitzgerald tries to describe Daisy as being a little foolish, she even hopes her daughter is so. “And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”(The Great Gatsby,21). She seems to criticize the social value of her time but she does not attempt to change it. For Fitzgerald, women like Daisy are the charm but also the dangers of the American Dream. Her carelessness leads to the death of Myrtle Wilson but she allows Gatsby to take the blame. Her lack of responsibility is revealed at the end of the novel,which Fitzgerald wants to criticize that the rich have no concept of responsibility in reality. However, also as a girl in upper class, in The Garden Party, Mansfield describes the changes of Laura, from an innocent little girl to a girl able to spot the difference of life. Being influenced by her family, Laura would act differently from the lower class but she turns out to be an idealistic and sensitive girl. She expresses her sympathy for her poor neighbor though she once wants to escape from the responsibility after the fancy party. She seems to understand the difference between life and death, the poor and the rich, after seeing the dead body. For Mansfield, the garden party is an announcement for Laura to enter the adulthood.
Similarly, the two novels, dealing with the conflict of money and love, are related to extravagant parties held for the upper class. However, in The Great Gatsby, the party is held often only to attract Daisy, Gatsby’s old lover, but in The Garden Party, the party is a family party, hosted to serve guests. The party is the beginning of each story. Gatsby meets Daisy finally after holding many parties, devoting his life to the chasing of his dream girl. Fitzgerald focuses on the complicated relationship among the main characters. Gatsby struggles to earn money to achieve love while his lover, Daisy, gives him up also because of money. Unlike Fitzgerald, Mansfield focuses on the mental changes of Laura, whose transformations through the party show the attitude she has towards the lower class and her understanding of real life.
In The Great Gatsby, the main events of the novel take place in the summer of 1922. The 1920s in the United States has been described as a period of material success and spiritual frustration.“It was a sad period, the dream had failed, and the country was building up economic troubles all along and heading direct toward disaster”(Chang 154-56). Still,many people became rich and there was an economic boom after the WWⅠ. Excitement and enthusiasm subsided to make way for disillusionment. People at that era seemed to have no faith in heroism, patriotism and democracy and strove for money and status. Just like Gatsby, and also Daisy, believe that happiness is with money and status. In The Garden Party, its luxurious setting is based on Mansfield's childhood home at Tinakori Road, Wellington. As a teenage, relying more on the family and knowing less about the real society, Laura acts just as a girl who has not established her values and needs advice from others. Like Fitzgerald, Mansfield tells the story from the third-person point of view, easily leading the readers resonate with the characters.
The tension between realism and idealism can both be seen in the two stories. The Great Gatsby is regarded as a cautionary tale of the decadent downside of the American dream. The loss of an ideal and disillusionment that comes with the failure are exploited fully in the personal tragedy of Gatsby. The story deals with human aspiration to start over again, social politics and its brutality and also betrayal, of one's own ideals and of people.While in The Garden Party, Laura is stuck in a world of high-class housing, food, family, and garden parties. She then discovers her neighbor from a lower class has died and she clicks back to reality upon discovering death. Even though, The Great Gatsby ends with the failure of Gatsby’s dream, the tragedy of his life. On the contrary, The Garden Party ends with Laura’s becoming mature, and her different attitudes towards life. Fitzgerald is considered as a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s and write many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair. He would possibly like to use ironic elements and tragic endings to reveal the reality of the society. However, Mansfield depicts trivial events and subtle changes in human behavior, using the method of stream of consciousness. The different writing style might lead to the different outcomes of the stories.
Although Fitzgerald and Mansfield describe the similar lifestyle of the upper class ,they tackle the issue from different sides with different methods. Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as an era of decayed social and moral values, evidenced in its overarching cynicism, greed, and empty pursuit of pleasure, seen from the tragedy of Gatsby. While Mansfield describes the change of a upper-class girl who does not know anything about the class gaps and the things in life which matters, to a girl able to spot the differences in life to which what matters,and what don’t. Although they write in different ways, their descriptions of the society at that time have left great impression to the people and the reveal of the reality provoke reflective thoughts about the what should true dream and real life be. -w
