The US has always been relatively unequal. In this article of Confronting Inequality, Paul Krugman lays out some steps and policies to slow down the “rising inequality” in the US. For inequality does extreme harm to our life standard, society and democracy, it is important to find our the source in which the income inequality matters first and take measures such as implementing new tax policies, raising minimum wage, improve universal health care, etc.
Nowadays, it is indisputable that inequality does real matter to life standards and extreme damage to our society and democracy. Since the share of economic growth has shifted to a wealthy minority, the lower and middle-income families can hardly benefit from modern progress which results to their seeking a more equal distribution of income. American’s high inequality imposes great pressure on people’s cost which in fact they couldn’t safely handle. It is a common phenomenon that millions of middle-families desperately take on mortgage debt for the desire to send their children to a good school because parents worry that a bad start could ruin a child’s life. It is reasonable for the rising inequality in America, people has involved in a vicious circle which is known as inherited class.
In terms of the causes of social inequality, income inequality may be a major issue. As Paul Krugman says “The unliness of our politics is in large part a reflection of the inequality of our income distribution”(say page 5-9-4 in handbook), a fundamentally undemocratic force betrays basic principle for the benefit of political campaigns. The indeed negative consequence doesn’t lie in the people’s unable to pay for luxurious costs, but in their action to take on more debts as described above. Therefore, the policy of increasing minimum wage has been passed in 2007 which is viewed in two different ways, one is that this policy could reduce employment and increase unemployment, while the other holds that raising minimum wage has little influence to wage increasement. In fact, a minimum wage increase has absolute positive effect on wages at the bottom of scale. However, the minimum wage mainly matters low-paid works. In this aspect, actions about reducing market inequality should be put into practice in which ending to the thirty-year tilt of government policy against unions is an important method.
If America are determined to reform tax and benefit systems, the decisions to implement such policy may involve restoring to the tax systems impending expiration of the Bush tax cuts and letting alternative minimum tax.
Among those policies to reduce inequality, universal health care is an principal factor to be considered. Because of low income and a lack of social support, children who doesn’t have “inherit class” advantage from their parents may suffer from a series of health problems that in the end may deprive their life chances. It can be deferred that the implement of universal health care becomes more and more urgent. The author has stated in this article the importance of ensure equal opportunity without which social equality can’t be achieved. Nevertheless, the movement of improving health care is relatively an undertaking effort which could arise to a massive politics agenda.
Despite the fact that America are going through a rather tough time of a wide range of social inequality, just Paul Krugman says“The progress of reducing inequality now is likely to be more of a Great Moderation than a Great Compression(say page 6-0-3 in handbook), it is high time to moderate this situation both in economic and political fields actively and positively for this is a totally different age nowadays. In specific, tackling with the common phenomenon of inequality, effective and vast investment in crucial public areas is needed including education, a more progressive and simplified tax system, increased international cooperation. All in all, measures to reduce inequality should conform to America’s economic situation and apply to national conditions. -w
