All holidays are designated to commemorate something. According to the objects of celebration, the ten federal holidays can be placed into two groups, “people-oriented” and “event-oriented”. The first “people-oriented” group includes all holidays coming from citizens contributing to traits highly valued today such as devotion and sacrifice, and birthdays of eminent figures such as President George Washington and Martin Luther King. “Veterans Day” was first designated to commemorate the end of World War I.  However, in 1954 President Eisenhower signed an order making “Veterans Day” a holiday in memory of all fighting men of every war in the history of the United States, so it is categorized into the first group. “New Year’s Day”, which celebrates the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year, thus is put into the “event-oriented” group.

Alternative holidays observed by some states as replacements or supplements of the ten federal holidays can be divided into three groups according to their origins and purposes. They are respectively labelled “state-and-politics-oriented” (SPO),  “culture-and-custom-oriented” (CCO) and “religion-and-calendar-oriented” (RCO). As shown in Table II, not only holidays designated for the commemoration of civil rights, such as the struggle for independence, fighting for equal treatment between different races and genders, are divided into the SPO group, but also those holidays strengthening national unity and achieving certain goals with the country will as targets as well . Therefore the SPO group also includes Arbor Day and the Battle of Bennington. Pioneer Day commemorates the Western Gold Rush, which stands as an epitome of the American spirit of bold exploration, and is therefore categorized in the CCO group. The rest of the holidays are derived from religious and calendar events and are listed in the third group.

I think replacing one of the ten federal holidays with Super Bowl Monday is appropiate. Firstly, from the former category we can see all states have the right to screen  and rename all federal holidays. In that case replacing one holiday with an influential event like the Super Bowl is acceptable. Secondly, it helps if we give a one-day break to audiences prefering live shows or events even if they have to travel hundreds of miles. A legal one-day off offers them more leisure time to spend on the road and recover from a jet lag. Thirdly the Super Bowl has already become a significant element of American culture. Having a holiday named after it can greatly enhance national cohesion. From what has been discussed above, I would draw the conclusion that replacing one of the ten federal holidays with Super Bowl Monday (CCO) is a good idea.
